  4. What proportion of OU students are aged under 25? A 49% B 25% C 21% D 13%

  5. What is the average age of an OU student? A 63 B 45 C 32 D 28

  6. What proportion of students have less than 2 ‘A’ levels? A 15% B 29% C 41% D 51%

  7. Who are our learners? • 250,000 part-time distance learners • 25% new students aged under 25, 66.9% aged 25-49 • Average age 32 • 51% with entry qualifications less than 2 ‘A’ levels • Can’t assume baseline skills level for information literacy

  8. What skills do they need? • Independent learning • Ability to negotiate online environments (elearning) • Knowing what they can trust online • Employability • Digital literacy

  9. OU strategy and policy • Integration of IL into curriculum in OU Learning & Teaching Strategy • Faculties developing their own policies • IL Levels Framework being used by module teams to identify and integrate IL skills into OU courses

A day in the life… • Supporting OU Learning & Teaching Librarians in writing online activities and delivering online training sessions via Elluminate (peer observation scheme) • Researching new areas of work, for example, digital literacy, assessment of IL • Supporting peer-to-peer training run by OU tutors in regions and nations (Associate Lecture cascade) • Investigating new technologies for their usefulness in learning and teaching • Library staff development sessions

Where next? • Developing statement of graduate attributes for IL • Developing guidance on assessment of IL • Information literate pedagogy – changing the way courses are written • Refining definition of what ‘integrated’ IL means, and developing measures to assess impact on learners • Digital literacy definition and framework for the OU, and creating materials
