  3. What is the MSPE? • Medical Student Performance Evaluation • Formerly known as the Dean’s Letter • Details academic history and performance • Can include personal & professional attributes & experiences

  5. How do I get an MSPE? Please provide the following: • Email request – REQUIRED! • MSPE Info Form – REQUIRED! • CV – Strongly recommended! • 1-2 pages MAX • ½ inch margins • 12 pt font • Appropriately spaced. • No tables! • Personal Statement - Voluntary

  6. When do I send my documents? • March 15 – May 1: MSPE Info Form, CV, PS • Evaluations received by 9/1 will be included.

  7. Why can’t you add materials received after 5/1 if the MSPE’s can’t be read until 11/1? • Ensures all 2010 Match participants have an MSPE posted to ERAS by 11/1. • Provides time for you review it and make any changes. • Approximately 700 MSPE’s will be written for the 2010 Match.

  8. How do I send my documents? • MSPE form, CV, PS • Must be emailed as attachments in MS Word format. No PDF’s! • Evals • Affiliated: Sent Automatically • Out-of-Network/Unaffiliated: You must arrange to have it sent!

  9. I’m a 10 grad, but am not in the 10 Match. Does the timetable apply to me? • Sort of. MSPE’s are written based on grad date, NOT Match participation date. • Materials can be submitted until 12/31, but the sooner, the better. • Once you graduate, no new material is added.

  10. When will my MSPE be completed? • If you submit your material on time, we generally have a serviceable draft beginning July-August.

  11. When will my MSPE be sent to ERAS? • MSPE’s will be sent to ERAS beginning October 1, NOT November 1. • Participants in the SF Match or CARMS must advise us of submission deadlines so we can prioritize your MSPE accordingly.

  12. Tell me about Review Copies (RC’s) • Email request required • Requests received by 8/1 will have changes made before document is sent to ERAS • 2-4 weeks from request date to receipt of RC. • RC’s do not include Summary section • Sent via email to SGU account only • Programs not notified of MSPE updates • MSPE format is standardized

  13. What changes can I make? • Factual errors • Grammatical/spelling errors • Appeals re: evaluation comments • Send attachment with proposed changes highlighted.

  14. Not that I’ll have any, but tell me about negative comments on my evals. • The MSPE is an objective evaluation. • Comments from Failed, Incomplete, and Withdrawn rotations will be on your MSPE. • If you get a C, qualification must be provided. • Electives have more latitude, but are not immune. • If a negative comment appears more than once, it will likely be included. If it’s isolated, it’s more likely to be removed. • Appeals can be made, but may not be granted.

  15. I’m applying to more than one specialty. Can I have more than one MSPE written? No. The MSPE is generic with regard to specialty. Only one is written for each student.

  16. Will you send my transcript to ERAS? • Yes, but you must send the following: • Transcript Check! • ERAS Document Submission Form (DSF) • Not available until your ERAS account is open • Written request • Transcripts sent to ERAS beginning 8/1. • Email us to confirm we got your check!

  17. I’m fascinated. Tell me more! • Transcript updates are not sent automatically. • As with MSPE’s, program directors are not notified of transcript updates. • Note: If you’re participating in other Matches, you must send $5.00 for each ($5.00 for ERAS, $5.00 for SF Match, $5.00 for CARMS).

  18. What do I need to know about LOR’s? • Beginning with the 2010 class, LOR’s are no longer being used in the MSPE. • Check the Clinical Dept. and Office of Career Guidance (OCG) sections of the SGU website for further information on LOR’s. • Check with hospital med-ed coordinators to for LOR policies; each hospital is different.
