  1. Online Science Fair: A new way to encourage science learning By Jonathan S. Bell

  2. The State of US STEM Education and Science Literacy: • The United States ranks 29thin student proficiency in mathematics performance, behind countries like France, Estonia, China, and Czech Republic • Less than 10% of American students reach the highest level of science proficiency, compared with 20% of Singaporean students and 18% of New Zealand students • Only 18% of American adults can describe what it means to study something scientifically • Only 42% of American adults can answer correctly basic questions about probability (e.g. what a 1-in-4 chance means) • Only 38% of American adults are aware that the universe was created by the Big Bang

  3. 80% of US employers trying to hire scientists, engineers, and other STEM positions have reported having difficulty, since few American candidates are qualified. Meanwhile, STEM fields promise stellar growth.

  4. Surveys show that a majority of students know there is opportunity in STEM fields, but they fear the struggles of related education, despite billions of dollars spent on improving K-12 test scores.

  5. Informed by Nature aims to inspire and encourage students of all ages to discover the wonder of science without focusing on testing performance or memorization. Instilling a passion for science encourages the pursuit of knowledge and underscores scientific approaches as tools for innovation.

  6. Our Informal Science Education (ISE) approaches rely on learning outside standard classroom curricula. We use the Internet and outreach programs to target pre-university students and encourage their continued education in the sciences by underscoring the fun and relevance.

  7. ONLINE IBN uses the Internet to reach out, engage, and inspire by bringing the wonder of science into homes, schools, libraries, and to any online device. Our website offers intuitive, interactive, and dynamic science information for the novice and expert, highlighting the relevance of science in every aspect of our livesand inspiring wonder. The homepage allows quick access to a wealth of online content

  8. ONLINE Science Bookshelf The bookshelf offers an innovative spin on the traditional library, with a wealth of content in different formats and media for all tastes.

  9. ONLINE History of Science Timeline A scrolling History of Science Timeline offers insight into the development of scientific approaches, discoveries, and human knowledge over the centuries.

  10. Guidance We have gathered an illustrious group of scientists and educators to guide us in our programs, approaches, and efforts online and in the real world.

  11. SCIENCE in the CLASSROOM IBN goes into the classroom! We send a diverse group of screened and trained volunteers into grade 4-6 classrooms of underserved schools to talk about the value of science and its relevance to our lives. We highlight how science impacts our daily lives. The architect integrates the laws of physics into her designs, the photographer relies on optics, and everyone thinks critically to solve problems and create. Our team helps light the spark of discovery and innovation in young at-risk students.

  12. CELEBRATE SCIENCE Join our network of high school students passionate about science learning. Reaching grade 9-12 students through existing science groups and clubs, IBN adds value and supports their efforts. We provide each group with activities, their own page on the website, and guidance and support in conducting research, visiting educational venues, organizing speakers, and implementing their own outreach. The Celebrate Science network helps interested students learn, expand their horizons, and engage their community!

  13. ONLINE SCIENCE FAIR Our Online Science Fair combines the hard work and ingenuity of students with the far reach and ease of the Internet, allowing students to upload science projects, participate in competition, and share their work with others. Students have the opportunity to showcase their work and share it with teachers and peers. Previous projects serve as a wealth of ideas and information.
