  2. Water Project

  3. Jack Maxwell

  4. When you eliminate waterborne disease from a village you empower that village in more ways than you can imagine. • Recent studies have shown Sawyer filters eliminate up to 85% of all diarrheal disease within the community just weeks after implementation. • The filter pays for itself within a year with money that would have been spent on medical bills or fuel/wood to boil water. • Income that was spent on medical bills for preventable diseases is now spent on food and other essential items. • Men and women are healthy enough to work and earn a living. • Parents don’t have to stay home from work and tend to their sick children. • Children can attend school and get an education

  5. Providing Jobs • Not only are Sawyer filters being distributed for humanitarian aid, they are also creating sustainable economic opportunities in several countries around the globe. • According to the WHO, “Water management is a key factor in the global battle to remove the scourge of extreme poverty and to build secure and prosperous lives for hundreds of millions of people in the developing world.” • Sawyer has assembly facilities in Haiti, Rwanda, Ghana, Honduras, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, South Africa, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. Currently these facilities are mainly servicing NGO’s and relief agencies. However, in the near future sales of Sawyer’s commercial line of water filters will create many more jobs as these low cost home systems are marketed and sold on a mass scale to families in more urban areas.

  6. Products PointONE Filter™ Create a point of use water filtration system in minutes by affixing the 0.1 micron filter to a locally found plastic container. Fill up the bucket with water from a lake, stream, borehole, contaminated well and gravity does the rest. This fast flowing system produces more than enough clean, safe water for a family’s daily drinking, cooking and cleaning needs. With proper maintenance the filter never needs replacing. When it clogs or slows down simply backwash it with the included syringe. Removes: ALL harmful bacteria and protozoa Output: Up to 360 gallons per day using gravity. Increase the output with additional filters or increased head pressure. Life expectancy: Capable of lasting decades Weight: 8 ounces, find a bucket when you get in country. Squeeze Filter Don’t trust the tap or bottle water abroad? This filter screws directly on to most threaded water bottles as well as the reusable pouches included with the filter. You can either squeeze the pouch and filter water into a different container/water bottle or drink directly from the filter. This lightweight filter is perfect for traveling. Removes: ALL harmful bacteria and protozoa Output: As fast as you can drink Life expectancy: Capable of lasting decades Weight: 3 ounces

  8. The Sawyer difference • With Sawyer filters you are creating lasting change in these communities. We have reported cases where neighbors see the benefits of having a filter and then travel miles to find and purchase their own. • Within a couple months of your initial filter implementation significant behavioral change will be taking place regarding clean water practices as people experience the benefits first hand. • Using our global distribution network we can deliver, install and train the community on proper filter use within 30 days of your purchase on your behalf. • We can assist in making sure your project is monitored, evaluated and sustainable. Follow up training and regular reporting on how the filters are performing after instillation is an available service.

  9. Top Ten Features of the Sawyer Filter • Each filter is tested three times before it leaves the factory. • It does not require replacement filaments or cartridges and is guaranteed by the manufacturer for 5 years. • It removes 99.99999% of all bacteria. Cholera, Typhoid, E. Coli, Ameba and Protozoa are removed. Diarrheal disease will disappear within weeks of implementation. • People in country that work with water filtration systems have not seen anything to match our high flow rate. • As it is point of use there is very little possibility for recontamination of the water. • Immediate use. If you have a plastic container and our filter kit you will have 10 gallons of clean water in just over 1 hour. • The kit only weights 8 ounces so you can easily take it anywhere with you. • It is easy to maintain. Simply back-flush the filter with the provided syringe. It takes less than one minute. • It can be used to create a viable micro water business anywhere in the world for under $100.

  19. Why Belize? • We have $81,000 district designated funds available from District 6110 for these projects. • It’s international, but close by and a desirable tourist destination … a tropical paradise! • Belize has a stable government and welcomes foreign visitors.

  20. Why Belize? • Population of around 400,000 average income roughly $10,000 year • Some families spend $60 month for clean drinking water for their kids to drink while attending school ($720/ year) • Urban areas have good water but most rural areas have no public water systems at all. • English is the official language of Belize making communication & training much easier

  21. There are global grants being written by 2 future vision districts (6200 in Louisiana & 5340 in California). One grant will put filters into schools and the other will put them with families. The goal is clean water for all of Belize within 3 years. • Belize has 9 Rotary, 2 Rotaract and 5 Interact clubs.

  22. Why Belize? • Why Now? • The lack of safe drinking water is the primary cause of disease in the world today. Water borne pathogens account for 90% of deaths of children each year. • When children die from water borne diseases, it is a horrible, horrible death.

  24. The Filter Stats • Filters 16 gallons of H2O an hour with a Million Gallon Guarantee • Breakdown for the Life of Filter • 16g/hr * 6hrs/day= 96g/day*365 days = 35,040gal/yr = 28.5 years life expectancy • 16/g/hr*8hrs/day=128g/day*365 days= 46,720gal/yr= 21.5 years life expectancy

  25. The Filter

  26. My Goal • They have sent 4800 Filter Kits to date • I want to send 5000 (which will help 20,000 people: 4 people to a family) I am asking the club to consider giving $250 which will buy 10 filter kits…more is always welcome. I am going to get this presentation and a letter to all clubs in our district (40) and our rotary zone (1060) and ask for the same amount

  27. My Goal • Is this goal to far out there? I don’t think so! • If we get $250 from half of the clubs in our zone we can reach this goal.

  28. My Goal • 5000 Filters at $25 each = $125,000 • Rotarians in our Zone= 36,586 • Clubs in our Zone= 1060 • Break down per club= 125k/1060=$117.92 • Breakdown per member= 125k/36586=$3.42 • Is $3.42 to much to ask to give a family 28.5 years of clean drinking water?

  29. My Goal • When you or your club wants to donate please call me at 802-644-2260 or make a check out to MSNI with Belize on the memo line and mail to Cambridge Area Rotary Club PO Box 96 Cambridge, VT 05444 that way I can keep track and we will send all the checks in at regular intervals, which MSNI will send you a 5013c letter for tax purposes So make sure to include address on check or in a note
