  1. Penance and Reconciliation By Joey Cloran, Brandon Arens, AJ Rigsby, and Matt Peabody

  2. What is Penance and Reconciliation? • You receive this sacrament at a young age (8 years old) • It is in the healing stage of spiritual life. • In the sacrament of penance you are called upon to fast, give prayer, and do almsgiving. • In this sacrament it restores our relationship with God and reconciles us with the Church. • One form of penance is reconciliation when we grow closer to God by confessing our sins.

  3. Effects • Reconciliation with God is a restoration of us to God's grace • Reconciliation brings a spiritual restoration of our relationship to God • This sacrament, we restore our friendship and therefore the blessings of God's kingdom • It reconciles us with the church. Sin by one member effects and damages the entire church, but the sinner is made stronger through penance and therefore is reconciled with the Church.

  4. Rites and Rituals Rites • Individual- Rite of reconciliation of individual penitents • Group Gathering- Several penitents with individual confession and absolution Rituals • Contrition- a deep felt sorrow for one’s sins • Confession- telling of one’s sins • Penance- specific prayers or acts of service • Absolution- occurs through the priest; the forgiveness of sins from God • After that, there is a prayer of thanksgiving and praise, then we are dismissed with a blessing from the priest

  5. Forms of Penance • There are 3 forms of Penance. The 3 forms of Penance express conversion of oneself, to God, and to others • Fasting- To go without food • Prayer- To talk to God. (petitions) • Almsgiving- To give

  6. Examples from Jesus’ Ministry • Jesus shared many parables that helped us understand God's mercy. The parable of the Prodigal Son is one of the more recognized that we use to understand the mercy and strength of God's forgiveness. • Not also did Jesus speak of God's mercy through parables, but he also put God's mercy through parables. He also put God's mercy into action by granting forgiveness to all sinners. He knew that we as humans would need continuous healing and reconciliation. Jesus gave the authority to the Apostles. Today, priests are empowered to forgive sins by this same authority, given to them in Holy Orders.
