  2. Composition Plan • Narrative Work • What is narrative? • Why do stories have so much power? Think about your own life • What makes a good narrative? • How does style affect the impact? (poem, article, essay, movie) • Analyze “Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder and Didn’t Call the Police”

  3. Narrative—What is it? It comes from a Latin verb meaning “to tell” so it is literally ANY account of connected events (doesn’t mean it has to be chronological), presented to a reader or listener by way of written or spoken communication, or images (doesn’t have to be true). So, not always a long work—can be a novel, a short story, a poem (narrative poem), a film, a song If it’s in your head, it’s a story—once you choose to put that story into language, it becomes a narrative.

  4. Narrative Elements • A narrative must have three things • A Story • A Plot • A Storyteller (Point-of-view is up to you)

  5. Effective Narrative? Clear beginning, middle, and end (structure) Smooth flow from one idea to the next Conflict! Vivid description/vivid verbs Causes an emotional reaction (laughter, tears, thoughtfulness) Identifiable characters Clear Purpose

  6. “Thirty-Eight” What is the article’s main point? (Purpose) Gansberg is very precise in this article, especially in his references to time, addresses, and ages. Why? What does the detail add to the story? (Technique) The objective newspaper style is dominant in this article, but the writer’s anger still shows through. List words and phrases that reveal his attitude toward the material. (Style) Because this article was originally set in the narrow columns of a newspaper, it has many short paragraphs. Would the narrative be more effective if some of these brief paragraphs were combined? If so, why? If not, why not? Give examples to support your answer. (Structure)
