Information Technology Support Activities Framework - The five (5) pillars WMO • Positioning the Information Technology Division (ITD) as a customer-oriented and service-based division • Streamlining the business processes by consolidating and supporting one set of Corporate integrated systems • Maintaining and modernizing a cost-effective and robust IT infrastructure • Ensuring high bandwidth connectivity to cater for platforms like video conferencing, and collaborative tools • On-going institutionalizing of IT security policy and implementing technical solutions to reduce security threats. Information Technology Support Activities Key objectives and directions WMO • Phasing out of desktop operating system (OS) Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2003 suite which have been in use within the Organization since mid-2007. • Implementation of an e-Library to provide 7 x 24 x 365 online access to materials in a variety of formats including print, e-books, audio/visual. • Adoption of a cloud computing model is a major part of the strategy to achieve efficient and effective “Green” IT. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) reduce the power consumption, as well as volume of physical hardware and software produced and shipped. REM/ITD (Cg-XVI, 27th May 2011)

A word on cloud-computing WMO Simply put, Cloud computing refers to applications and services offered over the Internet e.g. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Platform-as-a service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS).   18. Final thoughts WMO As IT permeate deeper into the workplace, if IT doesn’t work, the Office can’t function. But IT in isolation doesn’t have any business value. It is essential to recognize the absolute dependence of most businesses upon the Information Technology and the quantity, quality and the availability of the information that IT provides and supports. Therefore there are and will be an increasing need to align business practices with IT on a continuing basis. REM/ITD (Cg-XVI, 27th May 2011)
