  1. It is the year 2030. You are starting to test a theory about people’s sugar intake. You are only collecting data unobtrusively. How might you manipulate (either automatically or deliberately) the social/built/other types of environment in REAL TIME to modify behavior? Articulate your theory and design an experiment to test it.

  3. Goals Reduce the consumption of refined sugars. Preserve informed choice.

  4. Context for 2030 “Augmented reality” (e.g., Google glasses) exists and is pervasive. There is an unobtrusive tool to measure sugar consumption (e.g., we can embed in people’s mouths a device that measures the refined sugar that passes through).

  5. Problems Exposure to refined sugar is high People are typically unaware of what they are consuming. There are external forces that encourage the consumption of sugar Food information is often opaque or provided poorly or at the wrong time.

  6. Potential approaches 1 Develop a new molecule that duplicates the consumer appeal of refined sugars, but does not reduce health. Develop policies that aim to reduce the consumption of refined sugar. (e.g., strict limits on sugar content of baby foods) Make the consumption of sugars easier to observe by individuals and policy makers. (e.g., encourage investment in the development and adoption of devices that automatically measure the consumption of refined sugars) Change the environments or pathways in which foods are purchased. (e.g., at home shopping/less impulse shopping).

  7. Potential approaches 2 Make it easier to obtain foods without refined sugars (e.g., nano gardens at home) Develop just in-time individualized feedback on sugar, sodium, fat budgets – perhaps linking tooth device with Google glasses. Combine such approaches with more public communication of information to friends, colleagues, family and other supporters to introduce management, guilt, stigma, encouragement,… Populate a personal health record (e.g., a wider conception than a health care record)
