  39. Size of problem Between a quarter of all reported accidents are due to faulty manual handling. Most accidents result in back injury, though the hands, arms and feet may also be injured. The costs associated with these accidents, both in human and economic terms, are enormous due mainly to the chronic nature of the disability. Many injuries build up over a period of time rather than being the result of a single incident. Who is at risk? All employments are at risk. The highest risk areas are those where there is repeated daily handling of loads, for example patient handling and goods handling. What can be done about it? Avoid the need for manual handling, if possible. * Access risk of injury from any task which cannot be avoided. * Reduce risk by putting in place appropriate safety measures. * Provide training as appropriate avoid manual handling Do you need to move it at all? If yes, do you need to move it manually? 1. Can the process be re– designed 3. Consider mechanisation - using a fork lift. try bulk purchasing. 2. Consider automation particularly for 4. Change system of work- bring the patient to the new processes. Treatment – wrap articles at the end of the product line, etc. Consider: design, automation, mechanisation Phones: 043-46228 087-2627175 Fax: 043-45842 Email: loncd@iol.ie Web: http://www.iol.ie/~loncd/

  40. Assess the risk of injury If there is absolutely no practical alternative to manual handling then each manual handling task must be assessed. The sole purpose of this assessment is to identify the risks involved whichin turn enables safe solutions to be put into action. Who does the assessment? It is the employer’s responsibility and you should be able to do most assessments. You and your workforce know the business better than anyone. Consultation with the workforce is not only a legal requirement but very useful, as often those involved in a job on a day-to-day basis, can make the best suggestions for improvements. However, for complex tasks or particularly high risk areas, the service of an outside person may be necessary. Should assesments be recorded? Yes. They should be part of the written risk assessments in the Safety Statement. What about “generic” assessments? It may be practical to combine assessments for similar tasks e.g. in the case of patient handling – there might be a single risk assessment for geriatric patients. However the key to preventing injury is recognising that circumstances often vary, even when performing similar tasks, and it is often this variation which causes problems. So if it is practical to do generic risk assessments, the accompanying manual handling training for staff members must clearly include identifying all the potential varying conditions and how to manage them. Phones: 043-46228 087-2627175 Fax: 043-45842 Email: loncd@iol.ie Web: http://www.iol.ie/~loncd/

  41. problems to look for when making an assessment the tasks: • do they involve- • Holding loads away from trunk? • Twisting, stooping or reaching upwards? • Large vertical movement? • Long carrying distances? • Strenuous pushing or pulling? • Unpredictable movement of loads? • Repetitive handling? • Insufficient rest or recovery time? • are they- • Heavy, bulky or unwieldy? • Difficult to grasp? • Unstable or unpredictable? • Intrinsically harmful, e.g. sharp or hot? The working environment: • are there- • Constraints on posture? • Poor floors? • Variations in levels? • Hot/cold/humid conditions? • Strong air movements? • Poor lighting conditions? • Restrictions on movement or posture from • clothes or personal protective equipment? • does the job - • Require unusual capability? • Endanger those with a health problem? • Endanger pregnant women? • Call for special information or training? Phones: 043-46228 087-2627175 Fax: 043-45842 Email: loncd@iol.ie Web: http://www.iol.ie/~loncd/

  42. ways of reducing the risk of injury • Can you - • Improve workplace layout to improve efficiency? • Reduce the amount of twisting and stooping? • Avoid lifting from floor level or above shoulder height? • Cut carrying distances? • Avoid repetitive handling? • Vary the work, allowing one set of muscles to rest while another is used? • Can you make them - • Lighter or less bulky? • Easier to grasp? • More stable? • Less damaging to hold? • Have you asked your suppliers to help? • Can you - • Remove obstructions? • Provide better flooring? • Avoid steps and steep ramps? • Prevent extremes of hot or cold? • Improve lighting? • Consider less restrictive clothing or personal protective equipment? • Can you - • Take better care of those who have a physical weakness or are pregnant? • Give your employees more information, e.g. about the range of tasks they are likely to face? • Provide training? Phones: 043-46228 087-2627175 Fax: 043-45842 Email: loncd@iol.ie Web: http://www.iol.ie/~loncd/

  43. Key factors are: • Excessive fatigue • Bad posture – cramped, restricted areas • Heavy loads • Repetitive bending or twisting • Frequent lifting • Twisting • If a lifting task includes twisting there is a considerable increase in the chance of injury. • Frequent lifting or lowering • These guideline weights assume up to 30 leisurely operations an hour – where the pace of work isn’t forced, there are adequate pauses to rest and the load isn’t held for any length of time. • The weights must be reduced if the operation is repeated more often • By 30% if repeated once or twice per minute • By 50% if repeated five to eight times per minute • By 80% if repeated more than twelve times per minute What are the maximum weights to be lifted? There are no longer any absolute weight limits – for the simple reason that there are too many factors involved – these risk factors have already been covered. Guideline Weights Phones: 043-46228 087-2627175 Fax: 043-45842 Email: loncd@iol.ie Web: http://www.iol.ie/~loncd/

  44. Provision of mechanical aids Wherever practical they must be provided – they can be as simple as a sack trolley. Any necessary training in their use must be provided. Training • Where manual handling tasks which involve a significant risk cannot • be avoided training is necessary. • It cannot overcome • Poor work organisation • Lack of mechanical aids • Unsuitable loads. • It must cover • How to recognise risky manual handling • How to recognise potentially dangerous manual handling • The correct way of dealing with the problem • The use of mechanical aids • Good handling techniques Supervision As in all safety procedures there must be adequate supervision to ensure the safety measures, shown to be necessary following the risk assessment, are rigorously implemented by all staff.
