  2. 1st Millennium Development Goals country report for South Africa in 2005 • Millennium Development Goal 7 on Environment Sustainability includes 4 global targets and 10 global indicators • But these do not necessarily reflect the concept of environmental sustainability at country level

  3. Environment sustainability: • environmental systems • environmental stresses • human vulnerability • capacity to respond to challenges • environmental stewardship • But absolute measures of sustainability remain intangible

  4. MDG 2010 country report: stakeholder participation / ownership, trust, capacity building • Sectoral Working Group on Environmental Sustainability: Statistics South Africa, and Ministries for Environment, Water, Rural Development, and Agriculture, Fishing and Forestry

  5. MDG 2010 country report will be the starting point for national policy dialogues • Will serve as a vehicle to widen participation and action • Institutional arrangements will endure beyond the country report

  6. Environment Ministry initiated a framework building on “Pressure-State-Response” and “Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response” • Extensive review of international and national literature, workshops, consultations • The result is 20 indicators and 45 variables
