HW: Final Exam Review Prep

EC #3

Rap 30 you call this equality

RAP #30: You call this equality?

  • After 178 years of imparting “equal justice under the law,” the color line on the Supreme Court was finally broken in 1967 when President Johnson appointed Thurgood Marshall, the first African American, to the nation’s highest court.

    • Clarence Thomas, appointed in 1991, was the second.

    • In the Court’s 192nd year (1981), Sandra Day O’Connor was appointed as an associate justice, the only woman to hold that position until Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s appointment in 1993.

    • Last year, Sonia Sotomayor was appointed as an associate justice, the 1st Hispanic to serve on the court. This year, the court’s fourth woman, Elena Kagan, was appointed.

    • What are your thoughts on the “type of justice” that was being applied and interpreted for 178 years by the U.S. Supreme Court?

    • Do you believe that the addition of diversity to the make-up of the Court will bring more justice to our nation? Why/why not?
