    3. Lesson Overview This lesson is used as in introduction to the unit of ratios and proportions. This specific lesson allows the teacher to discover how much prior knowledge students have on the topic. It also gives students an introduction to the meaning of ratios and proportions and the importance of learning these mathematical concepts.

    4. Standards NCTM Standards Measurement Grade 6-8 Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements. solve problems involving scale factors, using ratio and proportion;

    5. Formative Assessment Students will be formatively assessed throughout this lesson through the continued use of questions. Students will also engage in a discussion about ratios and proportions.

    6. Opening the Lesson To get the students engaged in the lesson, start by showing the students a slide of disproportioned pictures. Ask the students what they observe by looking at these pictures, what words/phrases come to mind? Guide the students to come up with ‘proportions’ Guide them to the question of ‘what is a proportion?’ 10-15 minutes

    7. Developing the Lesson Discuss the definition of proportion and ratio Ask many questions and show examples How do we write proportions? How would you read this proportion? How can we test whether or not 2 ratios are equal? If the ratios are equal, we call them a ______? Give the students a worksheet with 5 problems to complete ? Go over worksheet with entire class 30 minutes

    8. Closing the Lesson To end this lesson, ask students to write a one minute reflection on why it is important to learn about ratios and proportions? Ask some students to share their answers. 5-10 minutes

    11. Introduction This lesson is to introduce you to the idea of ratios and proportions. Even if you don’t realize it, we use ratios and proportions in our everyday life. This lesson will help you learn the importance of these concepts.

    12. Learning Goals The importance of ratios and proportions in the real world

    13. Assessment You will be assessed on the completion of the worksheet and formatively by classroom discussion and understanding of the new material.

    14. Learning Activity Student Worksheet Find whether each of the following statements is a proportion. Explain why? 2/3 = 6/9 ______ 10:5 = 40:20 ______ 4/3 = 20/18 ______ What value of n will make this a proportion? 6/15 = n/25

    15. What words or phrases comes to mind when looking at these pictures?
