  • NASA GRC - continued goal of providing timely and readily accessible acceleration data, along with archival and analysis services for scientific payloads, structural dynamics monitoring, and technology developers.

  • SAMS - the Space Acceleration Measurement System:

    • has ability to instrument and measure local vibratory regime in all 3 of the ISS labs, including throughout the USL ( 0.01  f  300 Hz ).

    • given approval for upgrading the control unit, which provides a more robust, long-term solution for continued life-cycle support of the ISS.

  • MAMS - the Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System:

    • measures the quasi-steady acceleration regime ( f < 0.01 Hz ).

    • data can be mapped to any location (rigid-body assumed).

  • PIMS - the Principal Investigator Microgravity Services team maintains the acceleration data from the ISS and provides analysis and related services for investigators, sustaining engineering, and the microgravity community at-large.

Three Aspects to Consider

  • Spatial

    • Where is your location of interest (module/rack)?

    • High-frequency vibrations tend to be localized, so request SAMS sensor as close as possible to your location.

    • Low-frequency vibrations tend to be global. MAMS data can be mathematically mapped to your location.

  • Temporal

    • When do you expect to operate?

    • Relative quiet below ~6 Hz during crew sleep.

    • Some investigators leverage crew sleep for sensitive periods.

    • You “batten down the hatches” during reboostperhaps.

  • Spectral

    • Any resonances or sensitivities?

    • Fruit fly investigation has sensitivity between ~140-200 Hz.

    • Marangoni liquid bridge experiment sensitive ~0.25 Hz.


Scheduling and Hardware Availability

  • Spatial

    • There are cable length, and sensor mounting considerations here.

    • Low-frequency vibrations tend to be global, so MAMS has you covered.

  • Temporal

    • SAMS and MAMS have a primary goal to operate continuously.

    • Kevin McPherson for SAMS sensor availability (SE-F02 is an APH candidate with other possible near-term/future requests for support from PaRIS & ESA).

  • Spectral

    • MAMS does not change its operating parameters.

    • For SAMS, it is best to request cut-off frequency that is low, yet above your highest frequency of interest or concern. Given enough advanced notice (about a day), SAMS sensors can be ground-commanded to a cut-off frequency in this set: 25, 50, 100, 200, or 400 Hz. If in doubt, then choose higher cut-off rather than lower, but be aware that there are some analysis trade-offs that favor lower-frequency cut-offs (i.e. sample rates). Usually, once cut-off is decided, we leave it at that value.


Data Analysis

  • Real-Time

    • PIMS web-site for near real-time auto-updating plots.

  • Off-Line

    • PIMS server for complete access to SAMS and MAMS data with 2-day lag from measurement time. You can self-serve for the processing and analysis you need at your site.

    • You can request tailored analysis from PIMS team.

  • “Roadmaps”

    • PIMS team publishes (via web) a standard set of analysis products to give an overview of the ISS microgravity environment.

    • For vibratory regime (SAMS) these are 8-hour spectrograms (magnitude versus frequency versus time).

    • For quasi-steady regime (MAMS) these are 8-hour, per-axis acceleration versus time plots.
