Aim & Objective • Aim: • To leverage students’ technical and soft skills. • Main objective: • To provide students with the skills in analyzing, designing and implementing computer solutions to a variety of problems. • Through this course, students should be able to demonstrate their technical knowledge, problem-solving, critical thinking and good decision-making.

  5. ACADEMIC PROJECT I

Introduction • WXES3183 is conducted over a semester (normally Sem. 2). • Initial tasks to complete the project such as: • identifying project title, • producing a proposal • demonstrating mastery of developments tools • Failure to complete the project in one semester will result in the students awarded with an F grade. • The course is conducted by the respective departments. Hence, supervision and assessments are done by members of the department concerned.

Learning Outcomes • At the end of the course, students will be able to: • Analyze problems and produce problem statements. • Identify appropriate solution approach for the problems. • Review literatures related to the problems. • Use appropriate programming languages and/or tools for each solution proposed.

Synopsis of Course Content • This course covers the following research activities: • Identify Problem • Review Literatures • Identify Solution • Mastery of the proposed tools/programming languages • Write a research proposal • Present the research proposal (viva) and show the mastery of tools/programming languages

Roles • Students: • Register the Academic Project course. • Attend the Briefing on Academic Project by the Coordinator (Week 1) • Browse the e-ilmiahsystem to view the project titles proposed by lecturers. E.g., http://ilmiah.fsktm.um.edu.my/index.php?file=title&dept=KB • Discuss the selected project titles with the respective lecturers • Choose only ONE project title (latest by Week 4) • Meet the supervisor regularly to discuss the project (attendance will be taken to monitor your progress) • Attend the Viva session for Project presentation (Week 13). • Submit the report to the office before the deadline (Week 14).

  10. Supervisors: • Propose project titles via the e-ilmiah system. • Discuss the proposed titles with students. • Supervise and guide students on the project. • Monitor students progress • Evaluate and mark students’ reports.

  11. Supervision Meetings • Frequency of meetings: • By agreement with your supervisor • Once a week • By appointments • Some supervisors set a regular slots during the week for project supervisions • Preparations for meetings: • decide what you need advice and feedback on • in some cases, it is better to send things to the supervisor in advance, to give them time to read and comment • take notes during the meeting • if don’t understand something, ask to repeat/explain

  12. Evaluation Methods • Continuous evaluation: 100%. • Academic Project I: • Proposal/Report - 40% • Mastery of Tools/Viva - 60% • However, both components are COMPULSORY (if students fail to present both components, the marks will not be processed).

Viva • 2 panel members (lecturers from your department who are familiar with your topic) will be assigned to evaluate your work. • The schedule of the viva will be prepared by the Coordinator of each dept, usually on Week 11 or Week 12. • Viva will be conducted in the labs or BT/BK/BS. • Preparation for the viva: • Slides – to show your research proposal • Introduction • Problem Statement • Objectives • Literature Review • Design/Model/Analysis/Algorithm • Mastery of the tools/programming languages

Report/Proposal Writing All students are required to prepare a proposal for Academic Project I which contains at least the following information: • Introduction to relevant project/title. • Problem statement and the proposed solutions. • Project scope. • Project objectives • Literature reviews where the students should be able to elaborate and make a comparison on the methods/solutions that have been implemented before. - Chapter 2 • Methodology and system design. – Chapter 3 • Gantt chart. • References. Chapter 1

  19. Introduction • In this course, students are required to: • develop a prototype/system based on the proposal during AP 1, • evaluate the system • write a project report, • Demo the system (Viva) • Submit the report.

  20. Learning Outcomes • Based on your department. For e.g. For AI dept..... • At the end of this course, students are able to : • Develop project using identified tools • Demonstrate ethical and professional values in project development and documentation • Write report. • Solve problems based on best practices • Use knowledge from various sources for project development

  21. Evaluation Methods • Continuous evaluation: 100%. • Academic Project II: • Report - 40% • Demonstration of the System/Viva - 60% • However, both components are COMPULSORY (if students fail to present both components, the marks will not be processed).

  22. Viva • During the session, students need to present the systems they proposed. • Viva is normally done in Week 13. • Preparation for the viva: • Some slides on the project • A working system.

Report Writing • Each student must prepare a report for Academic Project II which contains at least the following information: • Abstract • Introduction to relevant project/title. • Problem statement and the proposed solutions. • Project scope. • Project objectives. • Literature reviews where the students should be able to elaborate and make a comparison on the methods/solutions that have been implemented before. • Methodology and system design. • System development. • System evaluation. • Conclusions. • References.

Report Submission • Where: • Please submit the report at the office • When: • Week 14 (Please adhere the dateline!) • What: • One (1) printed copy of your report using comb binding (for examination) • One (1) CD which comprises: • a softcopy of your report (in PDF or WORD format) • a system • a Readme file (user manual)

  26. Do’s & Don’ts in Academic Project • Do’s • Find your supervisor and topic ASAP (latest by Week 4) • Register Academic Project I and II consecutively • Meet your supervisor regularly • Don’ts • Change the WXES3183 topic and supervisor during Academic Project II • Plagiarize

  27. New Regulation (Viva) – Important! • All students are required to bring along the draft of their reports to be submitted during the viva. • Failure to submit the draft during the viva will result in the students are not allowed to proceed with their viva. Therefore, the student may got an F grade. • This draft will be used for examination, in a case where students do not submit their final reports. • This regulation is applied to AP1 and AP2.

  28. Plagiarism • As an enrolled student of the University of Malaya, you are expected to produce original work. • Any student who is found to have plagiarized his/her report that is part of the assessment in the academic project may be subjected to disciplinary action under the University of Malaya (Discipline of Candidates) Rules 1999. • http://ilmiah.fsktm.um.edu.my/index.php?file=rules

Excellence Academic Project Award (APAC) • APAC, started in 2012, is an annual event to select the best academic project. • The objectives of APAC are to: • steer the competition sprits amongst students to produce good/quality systems • acknowledge the effort of the students in designing and developing good systems • identify and restore good projects for other students references and exhibitions • The event will be conducted during Week 14 of Semester 1 in every session.

  31. The candidates for the award will be selected from the Academic Project II viva. • The selection will be based on the marks of the viva. • The selection for the award will be based on some additional criteria such as potential impact, contribution and innovative. • Prizes: Cash + certificate.
