  3. Not all students learn the same way, and this needs to be both respected and considered each and every day . All students must be challenged through appropriate, yet high expectations. Mutual respect in the classroom is the most important thing to maintain in a classroom. We are a learning community and every one of us has something that we can all learn from. Education is not about drills and tests. A successful student can explain the “whys” and “hows” of a skill or concept. Students will make mistakes. It’s up to us to help them to work through them and find a more desirable solution. Teaching philosophy

  4. Prepare students academically for sixth grade Reinforce the “independency” introduced in fourth grade Promote student responsibility (parent support is still very crucial!) Support all state and district learning standards Instill a love for learning Fifth grade goals

Students follow class and school rules, attend class, arrive on time, and speak up when they are having difficulty with subject matter I will provide a safe learning environment and deliver engaging instruction driven by state standards and inspired by student needs Parents will stay informed of school events and class assignments (checking planner nightly), and contact me whenever a questions arises Student, teacher, and family expectations

  6. 8:17- 9:00- Language Arts • 9:00-10:00-Reading • 10:00- 10:15- Recess • 10:15-11:00-Language Arts/Social Studies • Music (Monday/Thursday) • Library (Tuesday) • Small Group Instruction (Wednesday/Friday) • 11:00-11:30- Language Arts/Social Studies • 11:30- Lunch (change classes) Daily schedule

  7. Spelling is phonics based and will be based on the needs of the class • Grammar will be integrated into writing • Major emphasis on writing • Narratives, research, response to literature • Multi-paragraph • Writing process using multiple steps Language arts

Phonics instruction will support reading growth. • Students will continue to work on oral reading fluency to support growth • Students will be expected to read various forms of literature • Anthologies (in class), Novels (in class), Skills-based readers (small group), appropriate AR level books (independent) • Writing assignments will most often be connected to whole-class readings • Two book reviews will be due each trimester. One book report will be due the last trimester. reading

  9. United States Geography: States & Capitals Pre-Columbian Settlements Early Exploration Colonization Revolutionary War Development of the Constitution Writing will be tied into Social Studies Social studies

Weekly: • Three spelling activities, due Friday • One 5-7 sentence paragraph written to a prompt, due Friday • Nightly: • Read at least 30 minutes per night • AR tests will be taken following competition of each book • Depending on lessons and student needs, one practice sheet based on skills learned in class Homework

  11. May • Reading and Language Arts • Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Spelling, and Writing Strategies • Switch to Common Core 2014 • Technology-driven • Emphasis on writing, and a deeper-understanding of literature State-wide testing

In-Class & Homework Assignments • 3-2-1 Scale • 2-1: Student should correct work and turn in for a higher grade and better understanding of the concept • Late work is accepted, but will be penalized after 1 week • Writing Assignments • Points given based on type of assignment • If a student did not perform to ability, he will be asked to re-submit the assignment • Accelerated Reader • Point goals based on reading level and on 30 minutes of reading per night will be assigned. Students will receive a grade for the percentage of goal reached by the end of the trimester. • Tests/Quizzes • No re-takes due to the ability to redo all homework and classwork • In case of an absence during a test, students will need to arrange to take the make-up test before school, at recess, or after school Grading policy
