2. “Reading and comprehension are the foundations for all academic learning.” Reading is the core of the school day for young children. 5. “Pass” Skills Determine theme or author’s message in fiction and nonfiction Distinguish among basic text elements (e.g., problem and solution, fact and opinion, cause and effect) Distinguish beginning, middle and ending sounds made by different letter patterns

6. “Pass” Skills Identify simple multiple-meaning words Use sentence clues to find meaning of unknown words Determine the meaning of words using knowledge of synonyms (different word with similar meanings) and antonyms (words with opposite meanings)

9. How do schools help students pass IREAD-3? Use proven, effective teaching strategies Require at least 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction each day Provide daily targeted interventions in addition to the 90 minutes

10. Results Per P.L. 109 students must attain a passing score on the IREAD-3 assessment to be promoted to grade 4. 11. What if my child does not pass IREAD-3? Opportunity to Learn and Retest Retention Exemptions Previously retained two times Students with disabilities who case conference committee has determined promotion is appropriate English Language Learners with a proficiency of level 3 or less in the reading domain on the LAS Links English Proficiency Assessment Summer school remediation will be required for all students who do not pass IREAD-3. Targeted instruction for the individual students needs. IREAD-3 will be re-administered at the end of remediation.
