  1. Public Realm Contract Recycling and Cleansing

  2. Public Realm Contract A single contract that creates management and operational integration of the following services across all public areas, including parks, open spaces and land managed by Brent Housing Partnership. • Household waste and recycling collections • Commercial waste collections • Cleansing • Grounds maintenance • Burial services and • Gritting

  3. Public Realm Contract The Vision for the Public Realm Contract is to: • Improve the way Brent “looks and feels” to visitors, businesses and residents; • Encourage greater consideration by residents and communities of waste as a resource through emphasis on reduction, reuse, recycling and composting; • Promote a greater sense of civic pride and a stronger local identity.

  4. Cleansing Objectives • An integrated, localised approach to all cleansing • Achieve our cleansing targets • Services that maximise the amount of waste segregated for reuse, recycling, compost and recovery across all land use types

  5. Integration • An increased visible presence, staff accountability, and integration of services into the community. • Cross skilling between services and an increased pool of cross service knowledge. • Better control of resources and service delivery • Reduction in non-productive travelling time and the environmental impacts of travel • Faster response times to problems, requests for rectifications and emergencies • Increased levels of cleanliness and public satisfaction

  6. Recycling • All waste swept up from footways or removed from litter bins will be separated into clean recyclables and residual waste. • Waste items will be placed into the appropriate compartment of the sweeper's barrow which will be lined with a sack of the appropriate colour code. • When full, the sacks will be removed, secured and left at predetermined collection points along the route for collection by the mobile collection teams. • 400 black lockable bag storage bins are placed throughout the borough. • These are the only points that full bags of cleansing waste can be deposited • No bags left out on the street for collection in the future.

  7. Maximising Recycling • Veolia require all its employees to take responsibility for increasing the recycling rate on the contract. • This is done partly through incentives. • Veolia have committed to distributing 70% of all the financial reward they receive for overachieving on the recycling target to employees working on the contract. • Veolia monitor and assist with enforcement for all recycling banks within Brent. This will help ensure the banks are clean, easily accessible and viewed positively by the public. • Veolia have introduced split body caged vehicles in order to collect bagged recyclable materials separately to waste .

  8. Maximising Recycling • All sweepers receive annual training on how and what to recycle. This will include a pictorial guide and video. • Agency and new employees receive the same training on how and what to recycle before they start working. • Managers undertake ad hoc visual spot checks of the content of the sweepers' barrows and street cleansing bags to check the quality of recyclable materials segregated. • Veolia review the number of on street recycling containers and their locations to determine their effectiveness. • Veolia develop promotional campaigns and review the effectiveness and legibility of the signage around the recycling containers. • Veolia has committed to introducing 10 duo bins per year of the contract.
