  1. Prayer for India July 2011

  2. Facts and Figures • Population - 1.2 billion and growing • Capital City – Delhi • Main languages are Hindi and English (although there are 22 official languages) • 70% of the population is under 35 years of age • Life expectancy is 63.4 yrs • The most ethnically diverse nation on earth with over 2,500 distinct people groups

  3. Facts and Figures • India has more human need than any other nation • India has many religions: • 74% of the population is Hindu • 14% of the population is Muslim • 6% of the population is Christian (some say up to 9%) • India has more unreached individuals than any other nation • Over 80,000 missionaries in India

  4. (go to http://theminster.org/2011-07-10-latimer-minster-prayer-for-the-indias-dalit-people/ to watch the Dalit one-by-one video)

  5. Prayer Points • Pray for the Dalit Freedom Network • Pray for the church in India that they would embrace the Dalit community and treat them as equals.   • Pray that the serious ills of society are tackled with greater commitment and effectiveness. • Pray that Christians (considered as “Western”) may demonstrate, in authentic Indian cultural expressions, true spirituality and the transformation Christ brings.

  6. Prayer Points • Uproot corruption at all levels of government. Pray for courage and resoluteness to stay the course when allowing a culture of corruption to persist is a much easier and safer option. • Pray for women and children who suffer disproportionately.Pray that their desperate needs be addressed and that practices in society, especially towards those most vulnerable, might be changed to reflect God’s care for women and children.

  7. Prayer Points • Give thanks and praise for the continued freedom for Indian Christians to proclaim the gospel, despite efforts from certain communal and political forces to limit this freedom through legislation, intimidation and persecution. • Pray for the increasingly affluent 350 million of the Indian middle classes who have little meaningful contact with Christianity. • The Indian diaspora numbers nearly 30 million with 1.5 million here in the UK. Pray for outreach to these communities and pray about how you can be involved in reaching out to Indians (either here in the UK or in India).

  8. Prayer Points • India has 456 languages, 429 of which are spoken by over 1,000 people. At present the full Bible is only available in 70 languages and the New Testament in 120. We need to see a new effort, as great as William Carey’s, occur to increase the rate of translation. • Give thanks and praise for the missions and church planting initiatives that have taken place over the past 50 years in India. Today over 1,000 Indian mission agencies and church based initiatives have sent out over 100,000 church planters, evangelists and social workers to plant tens of thousands of Christ-following congregations.
