  1. Inflatable Lumbar Cushion for Passive Motion Team Members: Yim Chan, Mike Swift Client: Julie Sherry, MS,PT Senior Physical Therapist 4176 Medical Sciences Center

  2. Problem Statement: This device is designed to provide support and passive motion to the lumbar region of the lower back through the inflation of two cushions located between the individual’s back and the car seat. A small pump powered via the cigarette lighter or via a rechargeable battery will inflate the cushions to the desired pressure (30mmHg – 240mmHg) based on an individual’s weight not exceeding 250 lbs.

  3. Background Information • Extended driving causes lower back pain • Lumbar cushion to provide support and passive motion • Support for proper posture • Passive motion can prevent pain Put cycle of pain here!!!!!!

  4. Client Requirements • Roughly cylinder shaped • Rolls pelvis forward and arch lower back • Slow and steady inflation/deflation rate • Variable time on rate of inflation/deflation • Potentially, incorporate heat

  5. Design #1 • Four separate air chambers • Three cylinder shaped cushions • Fourth “U-shaped” cushion • Remotely controlled • Rechargeable batteries w/ cigarette lighter hook up • Pressures between 30mmHg and 240mmHg • 5 to 20 second variable inflation/deflation rate

  6. Design #2 • Two inflatable cushions • Triangular top cushion • Comma shaped bottom cushion • Remotely controlled • Rechargeable batteries w/ cigarette lighter hook up • Pressures between 30mmHg and 240mmHg • 5 to 20 second variable inflation/deflation rate

  7. Design #3 • Two inflatable chambers • Tear drop shaped upper cushion • “U-shaped” bottom cushion • Remotely controlled • Rechargeable batteries w/ cigarette lighter hook up • Pressures between 30mmHg and 240mmHg • 5 to 20 second variable inflation/deflation rate • Fabric Cover

  8. Proposed Solution Reasons: • Cushion shapes • Fabric cover • Effectiveness of design • Easily stored
