  10. How is Zipcar special? • What makes Zipcar special is its RFID driver authentication and its wireless vehicle-data monitoring.

  11. How it works • Zipcar members use “Zipcards” to access vehicles • The cards rely on RFID technology to recognize members and their reservation times. • Data is transmitted between the vehicles and back-end systems via a Cingular Wireless network.

Technology • For the first few years of operation, however, Zipcar used Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) built on top of an analog system to send data between its cars and reservation systems. • However that technology was not scalable or reliable Ex: members could have used their cards to open any Zipcar, regardless of whether they reserved the vehicle

  13. Technology • Zipcar upgraded, choosing Cingular Wireless to transmit data between its vehicles and its reservation system. It cost nearly $1 million for the entire project. • Zipcar still relies on RFID technology, used with a Zipcard and a reader on each vehicle’s windshield • Communicated on a GSM / GPRS data network

  17. Returning the car • The last step is returning the car to the same reserved parking spot at the end of the reservation. After returning the car , the accurate bill will be online for the next day.

Cost Analysis • For 30 cars fleet each car will cost around 20.000 USD total of 600.000 USD • The system per car will cost around 400 USD total of 12.000 USD • Renting parking lot will be costly and demand on the location. • Fuel and insurance are an important cost. • However technology helps Zipcar to save in many aspects like labor costs.
