  2. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Quick Tip Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelization www.PhillySharePoint.org

  3. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism • How many people in the room currently have SharePoint deployed on an enterprise-wide basis? • Out of those people, how many of you feel that your deployment has delivered the ROI you were expecting? • For those who didn’t see the expected ROI, would you say that your SharePoint environment was built around your business processes? www.PhillySharePoint.org

  4. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism If your SharePoint environment is: • Deployed throughout the enterprise • Built around your business processes • Not delivering the ROI you expected What would you say the adoption rate is amongst your end-users? www.PhillySharePoint.org

  5. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism What we’ve learned: Organizations that deploy SharePoint – even those who design their environment with specific business-processes in mind – often don’t see the Return on Investment they expect because their end-users aren’t motivated/trained to use the system. www.PhillySharePoint.org

  6. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism SharePoint Evangelism: • Investment of Business Leaders • SharePoint as a Business Transformation Agent • Understanding the Modern-DayWorkforce • Establishing Well-Placed Evangelists/SME’s • Evangelism In Action: An Example www.PhillySharePoint.org

  7. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism Investment of Business Leaders • If the entire leadership team doesn’t see the value, why should their direct reports? • If the business leaders don’t understand the value of the platform, it will be hard for them to believe in it • Investment of the business leadership is the result of understanding how SharePoint can directly impact their business processes, costs, and revenue • Business leaders must be willing to adapt the core business model for end-users to be empowered by SharePoint www.PhillySharePoint.org

  8. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism SharePoint as a Business Transformation Agent • For SharePoint to deliver a substantial Return on Investment, end-users must be engaged and motivated to collaborate and contribute to the platform • To establish that motivation, the company’s business model may need to evolve to allow the employees to use the tools that SharePoint provides • Core SP benefits - centered around collaboration, contribution, knowledge transfer and sharing – can only be realized if employees feel empowered to directly impact the success of the business www.PhillySharePoint.org

  9. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism Understanding the Modern-Day Workforce • End-Users Continue To Change Outside of Work • Rapid Access to Information (Web Search, Wikipedia, Mobile Devices) • Motivated to Share (Email, FaceBook, Twitter, RSS Feeds) • Power to Choose (Information: How, When, Format) • Consumer Behavior Demonstrates What Science Has Learned • Studies1 have shown that today’s employees perform best when motivated by: • Autonomy • Mastery • Purpose • End-User Adoption/Substantial ROI is Only Achieved When Employees Are Empowered To Use The Tools SharePoint Gives Them 1Based on MIT/LSE studies referenced in “The Science of Motivation” by Daniel Pink, 2009 www.PhillySharePoint.org

  10. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism Establishing Subject Matter Experts • SME’s should be aligned in each business group • These experts must understand and be able to convey the following to the rest of the group: • SharePoint is the new growth “engine” for employees and the company • It’s more than just a replacement for the file share • The success of the platform is dependent on employee engagement • When everyone contributes, everyone benefits from their collective knowledge • Training on how to use the platform and business processes specific to their work group (i.e. work flows, work spaces, wikis, etc.) www.PhillySharePoint.org

  11. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism Evangelism In Action / An Example • Law Firm With 250-500 Employees • Has SharePoint Now • Basic Portal, Limited Updates, Light Usage • End-User Skills Vary Wildly • How is business conducted? • Files are all paper-based • Attorneys only work a case that day, so files change hands frequently • It’s not uncommon to see shopping carts full of files rolling down the hallway • IT Department sees the value and has worked hard to demonstrate it, but they aren’t seeing the adoption or ROI www.PhillySharePoint.org

  12. Philadelphia Area SharePoint User Group Driving End-User Adoption Through Evangelism Evangelism In Action / An Example Problems with this scenario: • Even though the IT department sees the value, the leadership team hasn’t seen it and doesn’t understand how drastically it could change their business model for the better • IT Department has had problems selling the value because the leadership team only sees the cost of building out the infrastructure and the training • IT Department budget is already stretched thin and the workload is heavy, so employee evangelism is impossible to make a priority • End-users see more value in getting day-to-day tasks done the “old” way than learning a new way – they’re not convinced www.PhillySharePoint.org
