  1. The Mystery of the Stolen BikeBy Dave Glover & Nicky Ayscough Circle Link Schools in partnership with Starz, E-ngage, Bio-Rad, Upware Environmental Centre & Cambridgeshire Constabulary

  2. It’s interactive • The topic- Forensic Science • There is a mixture of computer technology and practical science • Before the exercise there is material available for children to learn about forensic science • Part 2 of the exercise is to take part in the on-line computer day on e-ngage.live • The children act as scene of crime experts and investigators

  3. The Activity Day • The 3rd part of the exercise is the practical science day at Upware Environmental Centre • The 2nd and 3rd part are linked as the computer day uses film shot in and around Upware village. The children will see locations on the computer day and then visit them on the activity day!! • They will walk around the village collecting evidence and then test it in order to catch the burglar!

  4. The Internet Scenario • The burglary was staged at the Upware Centre and local actors were filmed to set out the story of the burglary. • Shots of witnesses telling their stories were staged around the village of Upware. • During this period the actors implicate 5 suspects but their names and descriptions are withheld. • On the next slides are the actors setting out the scenario.

  5. Detective Inspector Grime

  6. 1st Activity Session • After seeing the first clip the children will look at the materials they have been given. • They would have at this time a Burglary pack and a map of Upware (see file on disc.) • They will probably send an initial e-mail to the control room to check that they get a response. • FIVE MINUTE GAP TO NEXT MESSAGE

  7. Police Constable Smith

  8. 2nd Activity Session • After this clip the pupils will be given a crime report and a copy of the poster from the gate. (see file on disc.) • A flow of questions are now expected about the bike and what is on the poster. • TEN MINUTES TO NEXT MESSAGE.

  9. Witness 1-Sid Goose

  10. 3rd Activity Session • Questions are likely to come in quickly now! • Children will not be told why the lad was crying. • Children will not be told the time of the last post. • Both of these will be seen on the activity day. • 15 MINUTES TO NEXT CLIP.

  11. Witness 2-Gerry Blythe

  12. 4th Activity Session • Another suspect is introduced- who owns the boat? The children won’t be told yet. • They will ask about the card- They will be told that it will be available on the activity day! • TEN MINUTES TO THE NEXT CLIP.

  13. Witness 3- Harry Carter

  14. 5th Activity Session • Is this the same woman as on the path? • Questioning re. the description will show that this is suspect No. 5. • What was dropped- They will find the item on the walk around the village. • Try to get the children to mark on the map the general area of the ‘drop’. • TEN MINUTES TO FINAL MESSAGE.

  15. D.I.Grime sums up

  16. 6th Activity Session • The Session will have been running for about an hour. • In a lower ability group it may be that suspect sheets could be given out to enable the enthusiasm to continue. • See disc for suspect files • If questions are still being asked and everything is still vibrant then these can wait until the end. • The session should end in thirty minutes.

  17. After the computer session-preparation for the activity day. • Once all descriptions have been obtained and a pen picture of each suspect is known a statement from each of the witnesses should be written. • This should include what the witnesses said the suspect was doing. This may prove to be important- It may link evidence to a particular person! • Once the statements are written the suspect sheets can be given out- Are they on the right track-Everyone should be happy they are ready for the activity day!
