  1. Do Now Take a few minutes to write down what you know about tax, tip, discount, gratuity, fees, markup and markdown.

  2. Tax, Tip (Gratuity) & Fees(using proportions) October 16, 2013 Essential Question: How do you use a proportion to solve tax, tip & fee problems?

  3. Using Proportions In the past, when trying to calculate tax and tip you learned that you multiply and then add. This year we are going to solve these type problems through the use of proportions. You MUST use the proportion to solve from now on. =)

  4. Percents Use the percent proportion. (we like to call it the skeleton). part = % whole 100 From here we are going to use cross products and solve for our unknown.

  5. I do…Tax • Miss Vincent bought a new pair of Jordan’s for $114.97. NJ sales tax is 7%. What is her total? _part_ = _%_ whole 100 ___x___ = _107_ 114.97 100

  6. We do…Tip (aka Gratuity) • You and your date are going out to dinner for Valentine’s Day. The restaurant bill was $235.87. The service was excellent, so you want to leave the waitress a 20% tip. What was the total cost for dinner?

  7. You do…Fees Miss Marflak is going to see the Knicks play next month. She purchases tickets for her and her sister. Each ticket costs $135 and there is a processing fee of 3%. What is the final costs for these tickets?

  8. Activity Time Independently complete the activity worksheet practicing tax, tip, & fees. • Keep in mind you MUST use a proportion to solve. • Have lots of discussion with each other about each problem before you begin to write.
