Heart PaThWaYs 4 What does the bicuspid valve do? • Bicuspid valve: opens and closes to allow one - way blood flow • Largest chamber & strongest pump • Discharges blood into aorta through the aortic valve • From the aorta, all body tissues receive oxygen-rich (O2) blood • COLOR the left ventricle and aortaRED!

  17. Heart sOuNdS “Lub Dub” • Tricuspid& bicuspid valves open and close simultaneously. • The closing of these two valves is the "Lub" sound heard through the stethoscope. • Pulmonary & aortic valves operate at the same time. • The "Dub" sound heard is the closing of these valves.

  19. Heart Rate Lab 8 minutes! Question: When your body works hard during exercise, your cells need more oxygen and nutrients, and they make more carbon dioxide and other waste. How does your circulatory system respond to these changes? Hypothesis: I think that when my body works hard during exercise, my circulatory system responds by___________________________________ * Finding your carotid artery* • Use 2 fingers (index & middle finger) to find the “corner” of your jaw and move your fingers slightly down & forward. • Press lightly until you feel a pulse.
