  2. Martin Luther 1. One can achieve salvation by faith alone. 2. The Bible is the ultimate authority. 3. All humans are equal before God. • The Lutheran Church was the first of the Protestant Churches. • Luther wrote the 95 Theses- a list of 95 complaints against the Catholic Church. Posted on the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany.

  3. God has determined in advance who will be saved and who will be damned (predestination) • Faith is revealed by living a good life. John Calvin • John Calvin started the Calvinist Church- another major Protestant Branch of Christianity. • Calvin helped to expand the Protestant movement.

  4. King Henry VIII With the Act of Supremacy, I declare that the king was taken, accepted, and reputed the only supreme head on earth of the Church of England. The Pope has no authority. • Dismissed the authority of the Pope. • Headed the national church in England- became Known as the Anglican Church (Church of England)- another branch of Christianity. • Redistributed land in England controlled by the Catholic Church and did away with monastaries.
