What is Unicode? http://unicode.org/ • Unicode provides a unique number for every character • no matter what the platform • no matter what the program • no matter what the language • The Unicode Standard [Unicode] defines the universal character set. • Its primary goal is to provide an unambiguous encoding of the content of plain text, ultimately covering all languages in the world, but also major text-based notational systems for science, technology, music, and scholarship.

  3. Unicode Support • Apple, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP,… • Unicode is required by modern standards: • XML, Java, ECMAScript (JavaScript), LDAP, CORBA 3.0, WML, etc. • Guidelines on the use of the Unicode Standard in conjunction with XML • Reference: http://www.w3.org/TR/unicode-xml/
