  1. Do Now: • Why is the study of genetics important? • Watch the clip • Those that need to finish the quiz will do so after the video clip. Those that did finish, please quietly review last night’s home work.

  2. Homework • Homework was to read pages 319 – 322. Re-read if necessary. • Practice Punnett Square review sheet from the quiz. • Due in class next time we meet.

  3. Review • The punnett square from the quiz • Set up mom & dad’s traits. Set them up on the traits spaces below: Here is what you know: • Dad - Green eyes (heterozygous) and he also Black Hair (heterozygous) • Mom - Green eyes (heterozygous) and he also Black Hair (heterozygous) • Dad’s traits _____________ & Mom’s traits _____________ • What are all the options for Dad? And Mom? • Dad – GgBb – GB, Gb, gB, gb • Mom - GgBb – GB, Gb, gB, gb

  4. Do the following Do the following from the previous question – Dad – GgBb – GB, Gb, gB, gb & Mom - GgBb – GB, Gb, gB, gb Mom goes across top, Dad down the side

  5. Determine the ratios • The punnett square from the quiz • What are the ratios? What are the 9 – What are the 3 – What are the 3- What is the 1 –

  6. Law of Dominance • Regardless of the second allele, if the first allele is dominant (capital letter) it will be expressed. For example: Right-handed (RR or Rr), Left Handed (rr). • R r • R • r

  7. Review • Hitler’s hope was to have his “super race” by creating genes that were recessive, which he considered to be “pure”. Explain why he felt that the use recessive was “pure?” • If a dad has blonde (bb) & blue eyes (gg) and mom also has blonde hair & blue eyes then the only choice is blonde hair & blue eyes (bbgg). What is the easy way to determine if mom had an illegitimate child? • Answer – if the child has brown hair. Meaning it is easier to control thus must be superior.

  8. Review • You are a Genetic Counselor and you are advising a young couple. Mom has blonde hair and blue eyes. She asks what is the significance. You start to explain recessive versus dominant and incomplete dominance. • Mom then proceeds to ask what are the chances her child could also be blonde hair & blue eyed. Dad enters the room and you notice his brown hair and green eyes. You repeat explain about recessive and dominant genes as well as genotype versus phenotype. What are dad’s possible genotypes? Write out the possible outcomes. • Continued next slide

  9. Review • Mom bbgg (blonde hair & blue eyes) • Dad enters the room and you notice his brown hair and green eyes. • Dad’s possible alleles – BB or Bb (for his brown hair), GG or Gg for his green eyes. • Mom’s possible outcomes – bg & bg • Dad’s possible outcomes – BBGG, BbGG, BBGg, BbGg. Which translates into BG, BG, bG, Bg, GB, GB, gB • Why so many more? • Because dad has a possible outcomes, there has to be a few punnett squares.

  10. Do the following Do the following from the previous question -

  11. Before leaving Before you leave, clean up the area around your table. Make sure you have the homework(s) for tonight.
