Maya Civilization lived on the Yucatán Peninsula • The Yucatán Peninsula in southeastern Mexico and in the modern-day countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. • The Maya controlled a large group of city-states. • City-states: a city that is an independent political state with its own ruling government. • Maya civilization was at its strongest from about A.D. 200 to 900.

Popol Vuh • The Popol Vuh is a sacred book to the Maya people. • It tells that the gods purposely clouded human understanding. • It explains that a human’s view of the world is unclear, “like breath on a mirror” • The gods limited people’s sight and power. They know and see everything, but people don’t
Pok-ta-pok • This was a ballgame, similar to basketball. • Players had to drive a heavy ball through a stone ring, but they couldn’t use their hands or feet. • The animated movie,The Road to El Dorado has a game in it that looks like pok-ta-pok.
