Haptic Interfaces Enable people to communicate with a computer by using their hands to manipulate as well as feel virtual objects, which can be: Representations of remote objects (tele-manipulation) Computer-generated objects (virtual reality) Provide an additional channel for human-computer interaction Complement vision in 3-dimensional environments Promote active exploration through direct manipulation and tactile sensing of virtual objects The design and construction of many components of the new visual/haptic interface testbed were custom engineered for the high-fidelity requirements of this research testbed, in order to enable us to carefully and accurately perform psychophysical studies of the value added of the haptic interface to the visual interface. University of Colorado Visual/Haptic Interface Testbed This photograph shows the configuration of the combined visual/haptic interface testbed, developed under funding from the ONR DURIP equipment grant. A 5 or 6 degree-of-freedom haptic interface has been designed, built, and integrated with a Silicon Graphics ONYX 2 Reality computer with stereo graphics capability (CrystalEyes) and AVS graphical visualization software to provide synergistic visual/haptic rendering of complex, multi-dimensional data sets. The combined visual/haptic interface allows us to explore the advantages of analyzing and understanding data sets both visually and haptically.     12. Current NSF Project: “Haptic Interfaces for Spatial Learning” 2001-2004 Goal is to develop a multi-modal visual/haptic/audio interface for learning, using, and communicating spatial concepts. Target populations include those with spatial learning disabilities and those with vision impairments.
