  1. WG3 - POPULATION CONNECTIVITY Anna Metaxas (DalhousieUni. CA) Eva Ramirez-Llodra (NIVA, NO)

  2. WG3 - POPULATION CONNECTIVITY PHASE 1 2010-2013

  3. WG3 - POPULATION CONNECTIVITY AIM To enhance our understanding of the role of the exchange of genes or individuals (larvae, migrating adults) in maintaining linkages among populations. • APPLICATIONS • Population maintenance • Vulnerability & potential to recovery assessments • MPA design • Management

  4. OUTCOMES INDEEP 1: SYNTHESIS PAPERS Aim of papers A synthesis of connectivity in deep-sea fauna and implications for MPA design 1. Dispersal estimation using genetic tools (Amy Baco-Taylor et al.). To be submitted in May 2014. 2. Dispersal estimations from biophysical models (Ana Hilario, Andreas Thurnherr et al.). To be submitted in June 2014.

  5. OUTCOMES INDEEP 1: GLOBAL RECRUITMENT • AIM • To deploy recruitment frames globally in collaboration with industry to assess the larval pool in the oceans. • Methods • INDEEP/SERPENT/TRANSOCEAN collaboration • Successful pilot project with TransOcean • 19frames deployed during cruises of opportunity and at ONC

  6. OUTCOMES INDEEP 1: LARVAL ID WORKSHOP • AIM • To develop a protocol for processing the recruitment frames and learn about larvae and juvenile identification. • Workshop • NOCS, Southampton, June 2013 • 20 participants • Morphological and molecular techniques

  7. WG3 - POPULATION CONNECTIVITY PHASE 2 2014-2016

  8. Task 1: GLOBAL RECRUITMENT Subtask 1.1. Metadata logbook A Logbook has been created to keep track for frame deployment/recovery/analyses. Subtask 1.2. Frame deployments with industry Maria Baker has starteddiscussionswith BP workingoffAngola and continuewithTransOceancollaboration. Subtask 1.3. Frame deployments during research cruises Framerequest to Anna or Eva. Continue ONC deployments. Subtask 1.4. Data analyses Samples treated/analysed using standardised methods Student project from TransOcean frames (NOC) Student projects with other frames Subtask 1.4. Synthesis of first results Synthesispaper

  9. Task 2: CAPACITY BUILDING Subtask 2.1. Webinar series Work with DOSI in Talking Book. Subtask 2.2. Capacity building workshop In discussionswithBrownen Currie for workshop in Namibia. Needs right invitations to ensureknowledge transfer. Involve ISA? Subtask 2.3. Coordination with DOSI Ensure coordinationofeffortswithcapacitybuildinggroup. Mills et al., 2007. http://www.whoi.edu/science/B/vent-larval-id

  10. Task 3: OPEN CALL FOR NEW IDEAS & ACTIVITIES • If you would like to propose a new activity to WG3, contact Anna Metaxas (anna.metaxas@dal.ca) and Eva Ramirez-Llodra (eva.ramirez@niva.no) indicating the following information: • Aim of the proposed activity • Lead • Participants • Expected outcomes • Timeframe • Collaboration with ONC: • Continuerecrtuimentframe studies • Analsyeresults in relation to physical data – MSc? • New ideas?
