  1. SOCIO 2000—Vision Notes: Total drifters ~ 90 per year  ~ 300 total (all MSLP?) JIGMER? – 10N Somali UpW? – 0 ITF – 10S – 20S 12 surface moorings+10 – 30S Current array Flux mooring Subduction TRITON SOOP 50E 80E 110E Drifters

  2. IOP1 Day 1 Summary • TOR—accepted w/o need to modify • First task—SOCIO Implementation Plan • “Provide scientific and technical oversight” • The time is right to position ourselves well • Earth Observation Summit • 2nd Adequacy Report on GCOS • GCOS Implementation Plan

  3. Science Drivers • Seasonal monsoon variability • Intraseasonal oscillations • Indian Ocean dipole mode • Decadal warming trends • Indonesian throughflow • Subtropical/tropical overturning cells • Deep meridional overturning

  4. Progress since IOGOOS1 (2002) • 5 multiyear eq. moorings +CIRENE • 21 N. IO moorings going to 40 • New scientific results • Growth of Argo deployment • Some XBT lines implemented • Drifters steady at ~50% • Most sea level stations not real/time • Data management infrastructure (INCOIS, APDRC)

  5. Argo a year ago

  6. Argo today What research are the new opportunities for research?

  7. Wavelet analysis for zonal currents at 0N, 90E Masumoto The contour levels are chosen so that 75%, 50%, 25%, and 5% of the wavelet power is above each level, respectively.

  8. Depth-wise variation of SD of zonal (red) and meridional (blue) velocities (cm/s) 76°E 83°E 93°E U,V Variance Murty presented by Shetye 11 publications

  9. Issues (1) • Focus on in situ networks, satellite measurements the backbone • Scientific implementation challenges for moorings: design, funding, shiptime, vandalism, measurement standards, data mgm’t, int’l coordination • Attractiveness vs Need for deep and upper layer data • What is the required array? E.g. eq. focus vs a broad thin atlas array

  10. Issues (2) • What research to do w/. Argo data? • Re-review of XBT network • Real time sea level project? • How to complete the drifter network? • Build on data management infrastructure

  11. Strawman Mooring Design – 10N WIMAP – 0 – 10S Possible 110W / eqtr line – 20S 12 surface moorings – 30S Current array (1 mooring) TRITON 50E 80E WIOMAP, NIO, ?? 110E
