  • PROVOR float upgrades :

    • Set up the capability to include additional sensors

    • Improve the energy budget and reliability

    • Provide tools to deploy from VOS

  • Development of the Arvor float for operational needs

Improve transmission antenna iridium gps

Improve Transmission : Antenna Iridium/GPS

  • Allow transmission of a larger amount of data, reduce surface time.

  • Trident Sensors (GB) were abandon in June 2007

  • An antenna was developed and qualified at Ifremer in order to fit the floats in 2007. It is used at sea presently but need to be optimized in term of volume and mass

  • An industrial version, which will be smaller and lighter is under development at Satimo (Brest) which combines Iridium/GPS

  • Oxygen measurement withAanderaa optode.

  • 6 deployed by IFM-Geomar within Carbocean and 8 by IRD near Chili

  • First deployment Feb 2007

  • Problem on Aanderaa optode calibration was highlighted in July which is critical for the Chili experiment ( minimum o2 zone)

  • Ongoing activity with Aanderaa to improve this calibration

  • In 2008 move O2 sensor to upper end cap, near CTD sensor.

Damocles Project contribution to the Polar Year

PROVOR-Acoustic + « upward looking sounder »+ rafos transmitter + modem

Functions:

  • Can drift under ice,

  • Provide measure of the ice cap thickness ( ULS sensor),

  • Positioned at drift by gliders to whom it can send the data it has collected

  • Has the capability to detect ice free area to try to get to the surface and transmit its data via satellite

  • can be recovered at the end of the mission.

    Ifremer have done specifications of the float and helped Kannad (Industrial partner) to qualify the float.

  • first tests in basin have been performed in February 2008.

  • Improved software in progress.

  • Deployment at sea in April.

Arvor qualification

ARVOR: Qualification

- Development of a new float named ARVOR

  • performances improvement, easy deployment and costs reduction.

  • The weight tends to 19 kg instead of 33 kg for PROVOR technology

  • >280 cycles at 2000m

  • One, built by Ifremer engineering department, lauched in Dec 06 and end of Life Dec 07 after 186 cycles with permanent pumped CTD ( no more battery) (WMO 6900458).

  • Grounded a few times and managed to cycle and go back to deep water areas

  • Industrialisation process started with Kannad with some changes (a longer tube to put 24 batteries and benefit from Provor CTS3 improvements)

  • First prototype received end 2007 and first at sea experiment planned june 2008. 10 should be deployed in 2008

  • Arvor temperature and salinity profiles, provided during 186 profiles in 2007

    • 24 lithium batteries for more longer lifetime:

      • > 220 cycles, CTD measuring all the time and , 6 hours for Argos transmission

      • > 280 cycles, CTD commuted (optional mode) : 10 measurements nearby the pressure point

      • > 300 cycles, CTD commuted: one measure at specified pressure point (used to be the Apex mode,* not proposed presently on Arvor)

    • An option with Alkaline batteries is studied

      • Reduce cost

      • 150 cycles possible in CTD commuted (10 measurements nearby the pressure point )

    • PAGODE: autonomous profiler for the Bay of Biscay,

    • Vertical displacements by buoyancy alteration (in/out oil transfer), anti drift system ,

    • From 20 up to 200 m depth,

    • Recording of temperature and salinity profiles,

    • Additional parameters optional,

    • Data transmission (Iridium),

    • 360 programmable profiles ,

    • Industrial partnership (MARTEC):4 ARVOR “Coastal” will be manufactured in spring.
