  1. Leasing Farmland for Oil & Gas Production Water Quality Issues, Water Testing and Third Party Certification Deana Hudgins, School of Environment & Natural Resources, OARDC/OSU

  2. Why Should You Have Your Water Tested Prior to Drilling? Document current conditions prior to drilling. Gives background water quality information to landowner. Provides recourse should a water quality problem arise once drilling has begun.

  3. Who Should Be Collecting Your Water Sample? • Third Party Professional • Individual should not have a personal relationship with the landowner requesting water sampling. • Samples should be taken by an individual trained in water collection protocol. • Deana Hudgins OARDC School of Environment and Natural Resources is available for water sample collection. • Some EPA certified labs have personnel available to collect water samples. • Some SWCD or Health Departments have personnel available to collect water samples.

  4. What Should You be Sampling? * * Obtained from ODNR website: http://www.ohiodnr.com/oil/watersampling_bmp/tabid/23361/Default.aspx ** Include with Tier 1 if laboratory can analyze for methane.

  5. Who Should Analyze your Water Samples? * From OEPA Fact Sheet: Recommendations for Water Well Sampling Before Oil and Gas Drilling, June 2011 Samples should be submitted to an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) certified drinking water laboratory. The laboratory should be certified for each chemical parameter to be tested. Without attention to these details, water analyses will be of little or no value in an oil and gas water contamination investigation or a legal proceeding. A list of Ohio EPA-certified laboratories for drinking water analysis is available on the Agency’s website at http://www.epa.ohio.gov/ddagw/labs.aspx. *

  6. Walk Me Through the Process *This list is not intended to be an endorsement by OARDC/OSU or to be a comprehensive list of laboratories in the area. A list of EPA Certified water testing laboratories is available at the following website http://www.epa.state.oh.us/ddagw/labs.aspx. Decide which level (Tier) of sampling you want to pursue. Contact EPA certified labs for quotes, or review quotes from Alloway and Brookside* labs available on the Wayne County SWCD website: http://www.wayneswcd.org/pre-testing%20water%20wells.html Contact 3rd party sample collector. You can reach Deana Hudgins at (330) 202-3536 or hudgins.5@osu.edu 3rd party sample collector acquires sample materials from lab and schedules a time to collect samples.

  7. Walk Me Through the Process, cont. 3rd party individual will label sample containers and fill out Chain of Custody Form. Water will need to be collected before entering any kind of treatment system, i.e. water softener, reverse osmosis, etc. Water will need to run for 10-15 minutes prior to samples being taken. Samples will be shipped overnight to lab for analysis. Depending on the selected lab the payment may need to be shipped with the samples. Landowner will receive analysis results from the lab. Landowner will receive invoice for 3rd party water collection and shipping fee.

  8. How do I Interpret my Sample Results? You can refer to the Ohio EPA Drinking Water Standards Fact Sheet which can be found at: http://www.epa.ohio.gov/portals/28/documents/DWStandardsList.pdf

  9. Additional Considerations • Water well log can be obtained from ODNR for all wells drilled since 1945. They can provide you with well depth and geologic information. • If you have an animal operation or depend on large volumes of water, you should consider a water well volume test in addition to water sample analysis. • Contact local well drillers for quotes. • If you have signed an oil & gas lease consider telling your neighbors. This will allow them the opportunity to have their water tested before drilling operations begin.
