  2. Have you even been adding long columns of numbers like

  3. and half way down the ones column, you lose your place?  Boy, that happens to me a lot!  Oh, man, was I at 25 or 35?  Doh -- need to start all over again. • Scratch addition is a really cool method that keeps you from ever having to add over 19. • It'll seem like a lot of extra work at first...  But, that's only because I'm showing you each little step.  Once you get it, it's faster than the regular way of keeping track of stuff in your head. • Go on over to the next page and we'll do one!

  4. As usual, we'll do the ones first...  I'll write out my thinking by each step.  If you don't want to get lost, grab a piece of paper and work the problem with me!!Here we go!

  5. Now, we need to learn what to do with those scratches!

  6. OK, now let's do the tens column...  It's going to work the same way.  Work along with me so you don't get lost!

  7. Let's finish it off!  What do we do with those scratches?

  8. So, our final answer is 478. • Don't feel bad if your head is swimming a bit.  These guys are easy, but look confusing at first.  Go to The Number Monster where you can practice more.
