Work Smart Standards • Work Smart Standard Set • The collection of regulations, codes, ordinances and DOE directives that provide the EH&S envelope under which we assess our hazards and plan and conduct our work • Identified via the necessary and sufficient process • Tailored to the Lab’s activities

Work Smart Standards • Necessary Standards • Standards that apply to Berkeley Lab by law and regulation • Sufficient Standards • Consensus standards, state laws and regulations and local ordinances, Berkeley Laboratory internal standards and other standards that additionally ensure adequate protection of the safety and health of workers, the public, and the environment

Work Smart Standards • Necessary and Sufficient Process • 1995 - DOE Secretary states commitment to N&S Process -“….addresses how the Department will select its standards to protect workers, the public, and the environment; ….the (WSS) Process is intended to produce a set of necessary and sufficient standards appropriately tailored to specific work to be performed and the hazards associated with that work.” • 1996 - LBNL/DOE BSO N&S Process • 1997 - Work Smart Standards Set for LBNL established
