  1. ClearSky: status and near-term objectives Joe Vaughan Charleston Ramos Brian Lamb

  2. Topics ClearSky • Plume Rise Field Studies • Ensemble Effort • Current Efforts • Culture of Use • Task 2 assessment • NASA ROSES

  3. ClearSky Plume Rise Field Study • Objective: Evaluate CALPUFF plume rise • Measure top of plume height • Collect meteorological data • Document burns visually (Photographs) • Methods • Aircraft measurements • Ground-based measurements • CALPUFF reruns

  4. Field Burn Overview • 76 to 122 Acres • Wheat Stubble & Kentucky Bluegrass

  5. Final Results 2 underestimated plume height, slightly 2 - 3 overestimated plume height Newer emission parameters increase plume rise

  6. ClearSky Evaluation • 2003 ClearSky Evaluation (Jain, 2004): • ClearSky is highly sensitive to Wind Speed & Wind Direction • Small differences in wind direction determine whether or not smoke plumes are predicted to affect an air quality monitoring station • How to represent the uncertainty coming from the meteorological conditions? This motivated an Ensemble experiment! Heitkamp found that 12-km ECS was slightly better than 4-km original system. So, what about a 4-km ensemble?

  7. Culture of Use? ‘Most probable’ results?

  8. Current effort: 3-D CALPUFF Windrose graphicsInterested to do more with 1-km ClearSky… ECY Contract Task 2 Assessment:How to get ClearSky ag-burning results into the regional PM results? ClearSky and its use don’t necessarily provide realistic ag-burning emissions, nor PM2.5 results! So we’ve proposed a 2004 burn season re-analysis to build met-forecast driven inference rules for ag-burning emissions for AIRPACT.

  9. NASA ROSES Applied Sciences Program Approach to Integrated System Solutions for A Comprehensive Regional Air-Quality Decision Support System for the Pacific Northwest
