  2. This is a PLEA! This is a PLEA!

  3. Support better data collection and more data analysis on your campus.

  4. All campuses should have a robust, student tracking system.

  5. One of the CommonPrinciples for Improvement Invest in a sound infrastructure, in which information technology is central, with a culture that encourages people to act on the information at their disposal.

  6. If you develop a student tracking system, then you have the independence to generate inspired alternative rates.

  7. If you don’t develop a tracking system for graduation outcomes, then you are entirely dependent on others for vital information.

  8. DEPENDENCY Idon’trecommendit!

  9. This is where you go to find IPEDS-defined graduation rates for undergraduates by campus.

  10. This is where you go to find graduation rates for regularly-admitted undergraduates by campus.

  11. Examples of basic graduation rates posted by campus on the CSU web site.

  12. Examples of discipline-based graduation rates posted by campus on the CSU website.

  13. Our public information site is rich, but the content is just the tip of the “Grad Rate”iceberg. Our public information site is rich, but the content is just the tip of the “Grad Rate” iceberg.

  14. Perfect wave Nature can make a perfect wave… Nature can make a perfect wave…

  15. But, no one can devise a perfect indicator of student success. There is no single graduation rate that tells all. But, no one can devise a perfect indicator of student success. There is no single graduation rate that tells all.

  16. The solution to the “no-perfect- measure” rule is the regular use of multiple measures. GRADUATION RATE GENERATOR SELECT PARAMETERS Population Denominator Perfect Indicators Not Included Numerator Time Interval SELECT CONTROLS Gender Discipline Ethnicity Special Status SUBMIT

  17. Example of possibleextended interval graduation rate. Fall 1995 cohort of new freshmen by time-to-degree.

  18. Example of possiblediscipline-specific graduation rates. Fall 1995 cohort of new freshmen engineering majors.

  19. Example of using a different numerator and a different denominator. Rate Percentage Fall 1995 cohort of new freshmen: Engineering degrees.

  20. Another example of using a different numerator. Fall 1995 cohort of new freshmen: Graduated at any CSU.

  21. Example of possiblespecial status graduation rates. New freshmen by remediation: Where are they four years later?

  22. Graduation Rates: is the CSU glass half full or half empty? • You need historical benchmarks to make valid assessments.

  23. The six-year graduation rate for the system has improved over the last 25 years.

  24. The first year retention rate for the system has improved over the last 30 years.

  25. Don’t forget communitycollege transfersin your plans!

  26. FRIENDLY REMINDER • Graduation rates areby-products of: • Student preparation and student engagement, plus • Campus practices and campus resources
