  4. Hans Selye’s GAS • General Adaption Syndrome • Body’s response to stress comes in 3 phases • Phase I: Alarm Reaction due to sudden activation of sympathetic nervous system • Phase II: Resistance our temp, blood pressure, and respiration remain high, and there is a release of stress hormones • Phase III: Exhaustion where we are vulnerable to illness and in extreme cases collapse or death

Personalities and Heart Disease • Type A Personality • Toxic core is negative emotions and reactive anger • They secrete more hormones tied to plaque build-up on artery walls making them more susceptible to heart disease • Type B Personality • More relaxed and easy going • Less reactive when harassed or given difficult challenges and less susceptible to heart disease

  8. Stress and Health • Psychophysiological illnesses are caused by stress • Stress hormones suppress the immune system’s lymphocytes (white blood cells) • These help fight cancer, viruses, and foreign substances

  9. HIV/AIDS, Cancer and Stress • Stress and negative emotions correlate with the progression of HIV to AIDS • Which kind of goes hand in hand with the stress of having HIV • Magic Johnson? • Studies shown that people are at risk for cancer within a year of major depression • Swedish study found correlation between colon cancer and work place stress • Studies also show that a little stress can help fight cancer cells because the secretion of hormones • Too much reverses this
