  2. Monday, December 7 Power Words dlp What I want to say is that Alfred Noyes is a man who was a writ6er who wrote a lot of poems and articles. Legendary figures from English history were written about by Noyes. • Cursory • Rapidly and often superficially performed or produced • The first draft of a paper is a cursory draft. • Mundane • Characterized by the practical, transitory, and ordinary. • Cleaning the classroom is a mundane chore that falls on every student.

  3. Tuesday, December 8 Power Words dlp Noyes poem The Highwayman is about an outlaw and his love. The fact that England had been annoyed by outlaws might have influenced his writing. • Exigency • A state of affairs that makes urgent demands. • A leader must be able to act in exigency. • Exemplary • Serving as an example, instance or illustration. • The Civil War is an exemplary reminder of what happens when states disagree with each other.

  4. Wednesday, December 9 Power Words dlp The highwaymen, who people feared, waited on the side of the road. The highwayman is this poem is a dashing romantic figure. • Decadence • A period of decline • The Victorian Era was an era of decadence. • Covert • Covered over; sheltered. • Many times military operations are covert operations.

  5. Thursday, December 10 Power Words dlp The two main characters in the poem, the outlaw and Bess. People here the highwayman riding through the night. This is a regular occurrence.. • Superfluous • Exceeding what is sufficient or necessary; unnecessary • When middle school students write, they often use superfluous words. • Debacle • A complete failure; fiasco • Adolf Hitler’s intended world-takeover, was a debacle.

Friday, December 11 Power Words • Superficial • Concerned only with the obvious or apparent; shallow • A superficial reading of A Christmas Carol identifies it as a cute Christmas story. • Inhibition • An inner impediment to free activity, expression, or functioning. • Inhibitions can cause you to have bad grades.
