What is Cyber Bullying? • It is the use of technology such as a computer or cell phone to harm someone. • It occurs when someone is threatening, making fun of, or humiliating another person over text message or the internet. • Cyber bullying can also happen through e mail or instant messaging.

  3. Personal Experience • In high school, girls would create hate group pages about another girl that they did not like. • People would post embarrassing photos of a certain person to make fun of him/her. • Some people would receive Facebook messages from other people that were harmful and threatening.

  5. 43% ?! • 43% of children say they have been bullied online. • 68% of teens say cyber bullying is a serious problem. • Girls are twice as likely as boys to be cyber bullied. • Victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to commit suicide.

  6. How to Prevent Cyber Bullying • Teach children how to use technology appropriately. • Always reinforce to children the importance of really thinking before posting anything online because it affects themselves and others. • Avoid forwarding hurtful/embarrassing messages or photos to anyone. • Prevent friends from doing harm or harassing someone.

  7. Our Position • Parents/schools should speak to children about the harmful/damaging effects of cyber bullying. • Schools should promote anti-cyber bullying campaigns. • Especially with younger children, parents should monitor their children’s use of technology. • People should think more before posting anything online or sending a message via text message or Facebook message.
