  1. Slavery Just what drove the expansion of the British Empire into one of the largest in history?

  2. John Hawkins • Slavery was a popular trade back in the 16th century. John Hawkins brought slaves from Africa and brought them to Hispaniola and brought about 1200 African slaves. On his first ever voyage he summed up capturing 300 Africans “by the sword and partly by other means.”

  3. Treatments for slaves • Slaves had to listen to what they were told whilst their owners relaxed • They were kept very unhealthy conditions. • They were treated like toys that you could trade and sell to people.

  4. How the Empire affected one persons life. • Martha Browne was born in Kentucky, USA in 1808. • Her father was white but her mother was black. • She was owned by the Nelson family. • She was often mistaken for a white child. • A woman called Miss Betsy thought that she was to white to be a slave.

  5. Should we be proud of British Empire No • Slavery was cruel • Should be treated equally • At the time the British were mean Yes • We have new things that we need • Like spices and tea
