Universityof Milano-Bicocca • The University of Milano Bicocca is a new academic institution founded in 1998 as a result of splitting the Università degli Studi di Milano, one of the most important Universities in Italy • It conducts both academic and research activities in traditional and new disciplines • One of the main purpose that resulted in its creation was to offer an advanced educational and research environment with a strong relationship to industry by promoting technology transfer through the common design of innovative projects, professional collaboration and training

Department of Computer Science, Systems and Communication • The University Milano Bicocca participates in the Project via the Department of Computer Science, Systems and Communication (DISCo) • The Department consists of 31 faculty members and over 40 other members (PhD students, post doc, etc.). People in the Department have expertise in • software engineering, architectures and distributed systems • bio-informatics • data analysis • speech and image processing • computational models of complex systems • artificial intelligence (AI), distributed AI and Multi-Agent Systems • CSCW and knowledge management

Location – Milan (1) • Milan is situated in the North of Italy, in the middle of the vast area of the Padana plains, in a truly strategic position for the paths that lead to the heart of Europe • It has always been considered the economic Capital of Italy, leader in all business sectors, in the world of professionals and technological innovation • Milan is Italy's capital of finance and advanced tertiary sector. It houses one of the most important stock markets in Italy and Europe. Milan also boasts one of the leading European exhibition centres "Fiera Milano" with over 26 pavilions and a busy calendar including more than 70 shows per year • Milan is truly one of the few "complete" Italian cities, able to reconcile economic and social realities. It is active in many fields of culture and research. It is a busy and advanced Metropolis that attracts millions of people every year, offering a multitude of opportunities in the fields of education, employment, entertainment and tourism

Location – Milan (2) • The current day Milan has it roots planted in a past that has bestowed on us a patrimony of art and culture; which isn't rare for towns in Italy, but not all of them have so much to offer • The world famous L'ultima cena by Da Vinci • the Opera House - La Scala • the numerous museums and art galleries: many of Milan's treasures are hidden to the less attentive eyes of its inhabitants, but it's all there, waiting to be discovered • Milan also has a rich calendar of events to cater for all tastes, be it cultural, recreational or sports; the city certainly has something to offer for everyone

Public Transport System • Milan boasts an incredible network of trams, buses and three highly efficient “metro” lines • The ordinary ticket is valid for 75 minutes and entitles you to change as many buses and trams as you may need while it allows only one journey on the metropolitan railway • There are various kinds of tickets and passes to meet the specific requirements of different travellers such as tourists, businessmen and occasional users

Location - Bicocca • The area in which the University of Bicocca is situated is called Bicocca • The Bicocca area is in the north east of Milano; the University now stands on what once was the industrial site of the world famous Pirelli tyre company • The area also hosts • The Arcimboldi theatre • Offices of several firms such as Siemens, Pirelli RE • The University address is: Università degli Studi di Milano BicoccaPiazza dell’Ateneo Nuovo 1 I-20126 Milano (Italia)

  12. Bicocca - Reachability • From airports • Milano Malpensa Airport: take Malpensa Express to Milan (Station Cadorna). From here take the subway MM1 • Milano Linate Airport: take bus n.73 to Piazza S. Babila, then take MM1 • Bergamo Orio al Serio: take the bus Ziani Viaggi to Lambrate. From here, either take the train to Greco/Pirelli or follow the subway instructions • From train stations • The University is located close to the Milan Greco-Pirelli Station, that can be easily reached from main Milan train stations (Central and Garibaldi) • With the subway • LINEA 1/Red Line: Take the direction Sesto and get off at PRECOTTO. There is a shuttle bus which leaves from via Semeria and takes you to the University Bicocca area • LINEA 2/ Green Line – (at least) two possibilities: • Take the direction Cologno Nord and get off at GOBBA. From here there is a bus 44 (with stops in via Cozzi, via Emanueli) • Get off at GARIBALDI . From here there is the tram 11 which stops in viale Fulvio Testi • LINEA 3: yellow Line: get off at ZARA. From here take the metrotramvia 7 which stops at the railway station of Milano Greco)

Lecture halls • The main lecture hall – the Aula Magna –is located in the U6 building and has about 1000 seats • In the same building and in the adjacent one (U7) there are • Over 10 other large lecture halls – about 300 seats (U6 bldg. halls 6÷10; U7 bldg. halls 1÷5) • More than 15 smaller lecture halls – from 50 to 100 seats (U6 bldg. halls 11÷19; U7 bldg. halls 12÷17)

  14. Eating out • Bicocca students’ restaurant (around 200 seats) • Sio Cafè – large restaurant close to the University (over 100 seats) • S. Glicerio restaurant – large restaurant close to the University (140 seats) • Vivà – self-service & grill (over 150 seats) • Many other places, these are just some examples
