Republicans cont. • scalawags • Southerners who supported Republicans • term for weak, worthless animals • Africans Americans • began organizing politically very quickly • many educated prior to war got into politics • from being enslaved to govt. officials within a few years • 14 elected to House, 2 to the Senate

  4. African American Reforms • Education • around 40% of all children attended schools • Higher learning • Fisk University (TN) • Atlanta University • Morehouse College (GA) • Churches • served as center for community • schools, socials, festivals

  5. Ku Klux Klan (KKK) • Many organized “secret” societies • started in 1866 in Pulaski, TN • Goals • drive out Union troops, carpetbaggers • regain control for Democrats • terrorized GOP & African American meetings

  6. Enforcement Acts • passed to combat violence in the South • 1st – illegal to interfere with voting • 2nd – elections supervised by marshals • 3rd – outlawed activities of the Klan
