  1. Sound Waves & EM Waves

  2. Layer C Chapter 14 Recall questions Vocabulary Chapter 17 Recall questions Vocabulary Chapter 19 Recall questions Vocabulary

  3. Layer B EM mural (3 people to a mural) Uses of sound (use Ch. 16 online): EM Wave Glogster. See me to pick wave. Ear structure Model (Use Ch.15 online) Extra Credit: Current Events Article and Analysis

  4. Layer A – Music Project • Play an instrument for the class – 3 points. (2 points extra credit for MAKING one) • Describe the following • Describe the parts of the instrument and how each part contributes to the sound (What is actually vibrating? How is the sound amplified?)- 5 points. • How are we able to HEAR the music? (from beginning – vibration of instrument- to end –our inner ear) – 5 points • How does your instrument produce a change in pitch? -2 points • How does your instrument produce a change in volume? – 2 points • Presentation is clear, in appropriate voice and heard by all students – 3 points • TOTAL = 20 Homework project points

  5. How sound Begins…

  6. Speed of sound

  7. Loudness / Intensity

  8. Pitch / Frequency Infrasound & Ultrasound

  9. Doppler Effect

  10. EM Wave Basics

  11. Radio and TV

  12. Microwaves Microwaves absorbed by water, fats and sugars NOT absorbed by plastic, glass or ceramics Once the wave is absorbed transferred to atomic motion (Kinetic energy!) which creates heat. Oven = heat from the outside in Microwave = heat everywhere, all molecules excited together hotspots: wave interference Air in microwave is room temperature (can’t make a crust)

  13. Color

  14. Color Blindness

  15. After image Cone cells adapt to over-stimulation of light and lose sensitivity These cone cells become tired and stop firing, whereas the neighboring cone cells fire

  16. After Image

  17. X-rays and Gamma rays
