Who were they? • Apache tribes ranged far across the American Southwest and even into Colorado. • Seventh largest tribe in the U.S. today. • Migrated from Canada to the Southwest over three centuries. • Forced onto reservations in the 1870s. • "Apache." Apache Culture • Apache are very religious; all their actions are dictated by religion. • Apache worship several gods. • Apache native language comes in several varieties. • In the old days, Apache lived in huts made of brick or straw, or tepees. More Apache Culture • Apache daily life revolved around a large extended family. • Apache lived in bands made up of several large families. • Although they were sometimes warlike, Apache treated their children with great care and affection. Growing Up In an Apache Village • Boys and girls were taught to ride horses an from an early age. • Boys prepared to be warriors by walking for miles without water. • Girls learned to do chores. • Girls became women during the Sunrise Ceremony • Boys became men after their fourth raid on a village or settlement. Trading and Pillaging • Before the Europeans came, Apache traded extensively with other Native Americans. • After the arrival of the Spanish and the decimation of the buffalo, which the Apache depended on, many of them began to raid European settlements to survive. Apache Twilight • In the 1870’s, the U.S. government forced Apache onto reservations to make room for westward expansion. • Many Apache obeyed, but some resisted, beginning a frontier war with the U.S. Army that lasted for years.   8. The Most Famous Apache- Geronimo • The infamous Geronimo escaped with his followers from a reservation in 1881 and conducted guerilla raids in Mexico and Arizona for years. He turned himself in in 1886 and despite his deeds he became a kind of national celebrity, appearing at the St. Louis fair and even at Teddy Roosevelt’s inauguration. "Apache." The Apache Today • Today’s generation of Apache face a variety problems. • Many Apache live below the poverty line. • Others live on reservations with dirty water and hazardous fuels. • Still more live on reservations devastated by the recent wildfires, which have adversely affected the wildlife. • But the Apache have been very modern in their efforts to solve these problems, winning several historic lawsuits in the past two decades."Apache."Vol. 2: The Great Basin and Southwest. 2nd ed.
