  2. Group Work • Split up into groups and read the passage I give you • Discuss how this compares/contrasts with your ideas of Hell • How do the two passages compare with each other?

  3. Allegory N: literary work with two levels (Iiteral and symbolic) of meaning Many stories can be read as allegories; the fables we studied earlier are a prime example.

  4. allusion N: reference to another work of art A current Lincoln commercial says “…the road less traveled,” which is an allusion to Robert Frost’s famous poem.

  5. imagery N: description that appeals to the senses The vivid imagery in the novel made me feel as if I were there in the story as I read.

  6. flounder V: struggle to move The flounder floundered around on the deck of the ship after we reeled him in.

  7. tremulous Adj: quivering; shaking Marcie woke her parents calling in a tremulous voice for help from the monster in the closet.

  8. zeal N: ardor; fervor He pursued the world record with such zeal that he barely ever took time to relax or even sleep.

  9. putrid Adj: rotten; stinking Road kill is so putrid that we try to hold our breath when we drive past it.

  10. despicable Adj:deserving to be despised; contemptible When Daffy Duck says “You’re despicable” to Bugs, he’s expressing how deeply he hates the clever rabbit.

  11. lamentation N: weeping; wailing Some cultures grieve with lamentations while others find that outward display discomforting.

  12. scorn V: reject; feel or express contempt or derision for I was scorning the last vocab quiz because it was too easy; I hate insulting you like that!

  13. reprimand V: scold; chastise; blame; correct Once you’ve been reprimanded for talking during the movie, the management could throw you out if you continue to be inconsiderate of others.

  14. Terza Rima • “Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost • I have been one acquainted with the night. (a) • I have walked out in rain—and back in rain. (b) • I have outwalked the furthest city light. (a) • I have looked down the saddest city lane. (b) • I have passed by the watchman on his beat (c) • And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain. (b) N: 3-line stanza verse form with an interlocking rhyme scheme Though Dante was the first known author to use terza rima, the translation we have does not follow the correct rhyme scheme.

  15. dichotomy N: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different Originally viewed as a dichotomy, now developmental psychologists see “nature” and “nurture” as a combined set of influences.
