  1. First Aid on the Farm • First Response • Know who to call • Know appropriate information to give dispatcher • Provide care until EMS arrives • Check airway (A) • Check breathing (B) • Check circulation (C)

  2. Shock, Unconsciousness and Fainting • Signs • Cold, clammy skin • Pale face • Chills • Confusion • Nausea or vomiting

  3. How to treat shock • Lie the person down • Elevate the legs • Cover with a blanket • Give fluids

  4. Choking • Determine whether a person is choking • Ask “Are you choking?” • Send someone to call for help • Perform the Heimlich Maneuver

  5. Heimlich Maneuver • Wrap your arms around the victim’s waist • Make a fist • Place the thumb side of the fist on the abdomen • Grasp the fist with the other hand • Press the fist into the abdomen with quick upward thrusts • Repeat until the victim starts to breath or cough

  6. An Unconscious Choking Victim • Perform a finger sweep • Tilt the head/chin back • Pinch the nose shut • Seal your lips around victim’s • Give two full breaths

  7. Artificial Respiration • If a person does not respond • Yell for help • Put the person on their back • Tilting back the head and lifting the chin. • Clear the mouth of obstruction

  8. Check for Breathing • Look • Listen • Feel • Give two full breaths • Check pulse • Continue rescue breathing 1 breath every 5 seconds

  9. Head, Spine, and Neck Injuries • Do not move the person • Stabilize the body • Prevent any movement of the head, neck and spine

  10. Broken Bones • Place limb in natural position • Extend splints beyond joints • Use firm material for splint • Pad splint • Fasten with bandage or cloth at break and at points along the splint

  11. Amputated limbs • Recover amputated limb • Rinse in clean water • Wrap in wet towel • Seal in plastic bag • Cool severed part with ice

  12. Protecting the Pinky • Wrap digit in saline-soaked gauze... • …transport on ice

  13. Heat Exhaustion • Results from increased heart rate • Occurs with poor ventilation or • Loss of body fluids and salts

  14. Symptoms • Fatigue • Dizziness • Clammy with normal skin temperatures

  15. Treatment • Move victim to a cool spot • Give cool (not cold) water • Rest

  16. Heat Stroke • Result of body’s sweat glands shutting down • Symptoms • Mental confusion • Collapse • Unconsciousness • Fever • Mottled skin

  17. Treatment • Time is of the essence! • Move victim to cool place • Pour cool water over victim • Fan victim until help arrives

  18. Bleeding • Put on gloves • Use finger or hand pressure • Use a belt or bandage to hold in place • If bones are not broken, elevate bleeding body part

  19. Eye Injuries • Foreign object • Do not rub the eye • Pull upper eyelid over lower eyelid • Flush with water • If unable to remove, cover both eyes with gauze and seek medical attention

  20. Eye Injury • Chemical Injury • Flush eye with water for 15 minutes • Seek medical attention

  21. Penetrating Eye Injuries • Don’t remove object • Don’t wash eye • Cover both eyes with gauze • Keep victim on back • Seek medical attention • Transport on stretcher

  22. Eyelid injuries • Check eye for lacerations • If bleeding apply pressure • Apply cold • Seek medical attention

  23. Blunt Eye Injuries • Apply cold • Dress with sterile bandage • Transport on stretcher • Seek medical attention

  24. Poisons • If poison is a solid (e.g. pills) • Cover finger in clean cloth • Perform finger sweep and remove solid • If poison is a gas • Protect yourself with respirator • Assist victim to fresh air

  25. Poisons • If poison is a corrosive • Remove clothing from affected area • Flush with water for 30 minutes

  26. For any poisoning take with the label when calling for help!!
