  1. September 2019 South Berwick Community Survey

  2. Survey Background and Purpose • This survey was undertaken by the Library Advisory Board to gather information to inform decisions about services and programs. Libraries serve communities best when they identify needs and issues that residents care about. • The library has been open for 7 years and the building project and programming have been based on the surveying that took place as part of the library campaign and is now out of date. • Questions were deliberately open-ended to create a blank slate for people to muse about their community, its strengths and weaknesses and hopes.   • Not focusing the questions on the library provides information for other town departments and organizations.

  3. About the Survey Responders • 156 survey responses • Majority (70%) of respondents were female • More than 50% of respondents were 50 years old or older

  4. Question 1: What kind of community do you want to live in? “Safe, welcoming/friendly, culture focused on relationships, families, community.” “Safe rural community with good schools, outdoor areas, and places of business that add to the character of the town.”

  5. Question 2: Why is that important to you? “Because I value relationships and want my family and neighbors to be safe in an inclusive environment. “ “Because towns that value education and creating a community that fosters families is good for everyone.”

  6. Question 3: How is that different from how you see things now? “ “I think this is close to how our community is now. Some of the things South Berwick has now that we love are: Hot Summer Nights, Keep South Berwick Warm, Home for the Holidays, Great Works Regional Land Trust properties, Powderhouseand the ice rink.”

  7. Question 4: What needs to happen to create this change? “ “The entire traffic pattern in and around downtown needs to change. Traffic is horrendous, it is dangerous for pedestrians especially the school children, and it actually prevents people from stopping to patronize the businesses there.” “We have so many wonderful community events. How do we draw people in that don't usually attend?”

  8. Question 5: What are your interests, concerns or quality of life issues?

  9. Question 6: Which services or local groups did you use?

  10. Conclusion Strawberry Festival Lanternfest
