  2. Example, Part I • Exposition: • Characters: Tom Beneke and his wife Clare. • Setting: Their apartment in the city, in a high rise building. Set in the past. • Basic Situation: Tom is staying home to work instead of going to the movies with his wife.

  3. Example, Part 2 Irony: Quote: “He remembered how habitually, here in New York, he himself heard and ignored shouts in the night.” Explanation: This is situational irony.The irony is that Tom has often heard shouts for help he ignored, and now he is the one needing help and no one is coming to save him.
