Anatomy of a Stud(Wall). What do we need to know. We been asked to build a 12’ x 8’ wall with one 4’-0” x 5’-0” window centered horizontally. We’ll also be sheeting this wall. We’ll do this with 2x4 framing material. Pieces and Parts of a wall. Stud. King Stud. Jack Stud or Trimmer.

  2. What do we need to know • We been asked to build a 12’ x 8’ wall with one 4’-0” x 5’-0” window centered horizontally. We’ll also be sheeting this wall. We’ll do this with 2x4 framing material.

  5. Spacing OUT • Spacing is very important in wall construction. • Standards • Load bearing • Exterior Sheeting • Sheetrock (Drywall) • Insulation • 2x4 and 2x6 need to be spaced a specific distance apart.

  6. Spaced Out • Common Spacing • 2x4 • 16” oc • 2x6 • 16” or 24” oc

  7. Studs in the Room • How will you figure out how many studs you will need in the 12’ x 8’ wall? ft. The distance between each stud is feet studs

  8. And More Studs? The extra studs 1 per end 2 per window or door 9+4 =13 studs

  9. Do you have SOLE • Each wall needs a sole plate with a top plate and a double or nail top plate • 3 plate x Linear feet of wall • 3x12’=36’

  10. Headers and Sills • Header length = Window Length +rough opining(RO) + Trimmer width • 5’X12”=60” Window Length • Header=60+2+1.5+1.5=65” • Sill = window + RO • Sill=60+2=62”

  11. Cover up ! • When calculating the sheeting for our wall you need to know the area of the wall. • Area= Base x Height • Common Sheeting is 4’x8’=32 sq ft • Wall =12’x8’= 96 sq ft • Sheeting = 96/32=3 sheets

  12. How many studs and other stuff? • 13 studs • 36 lineal feet of Plate material • 65” header • 62” sill • 3 Sheets of sheeting material

  13. Your Turn #1 • You have been asked to build a 17 x 8 ft. wall with one 4 x 6 ft window centered horizontally. We’ll also be sheeting this wall, and using 2x4 framing material. • How many studs, linear feet of plate material, linear inches of header and sill, and sheets of OSB will you need?

  14. #2 • You have been asked to build a 10 x 8 ft. wall with one 3 x 6ft 8 in. door centered horizontally. We’ll also be sheeting this wall, and using 2x4 framing material. • How many studs, linear feet of plate material, linear inches of header, and sheets of OSB will you need?

  15. #3 • If you have 32 studs, what length of wall could you build? • Notice no window or door!

  16. OH, MATH • 1) • 2) • 3) 20 inches is what fraction in feet? • 4) If a 14 ft. by 8 ft. wall has a 4 ft. by 6 ft. window in it, what is the total surface area of the wall? (As in surface area you could paint).
